M7 Needs Repair: Advice Needed

Hi all,

My Leica M7 just died 🙁

I tried changing the batteries but nothing is lighting up in the viewfinder. I have had this camera for 3+ years and no problems whatsoever to date.

My questions:
1. Any idea on the problem?
2. Do I send this to NJ or Solms for repairs? I'm in Australia so shipping costs would probably be similar. Does anyone have an email address for either?
3. Likely turnaround time and cost? The camera is not under warranty.
4. Does Leica return camera via courier or normal mail?

You probably already did this, but a couple of suggestions: first, make sure the new batteries are good; second, clean the batteries' terminal ends, a soft cloth will usually do, although you can use electronics cleaner. You might also check the contacts in the camera. I have been using M7s since they came out, and other than the usual problems with the mechanical DX contacts, they've performed flawlessly. Sorry for your problem.
 
I've had no end of problems with the electronics in one of my M7s, and I take mine to a local Leica dealer who forwards it to Solms for me. They don't seem to charge me anything for this, but I don't know if that's standard. There is no sense in sending it to NJ from Australia.

I am not sure why you would want to send it first to New Jersey. Is there a Leica, Australia? Or a local authorized dealer? They should be able to take a look at the problem and forward it to Solms if necessary.
 
Thanks for all the advice.

I have discovered that there is nothing wrong with the camera (phew!) but instead I have purchased a bad batch of batteries (8 in fact) which I realised when I tried them on my second M7 (yes I do have more than one 🙂 ). So thankfully no need for repair.
