neat stuff

why the 400@1600? I would do that sort of stuff at 100 with the 285HV and get some light on them. Is the flash you were using low output? Not a critism at all; just inteested

@David,
Don't know that much about choosing the right film for situations. I wanted the flash to do fill, although that didn't always work out. What is 285HV?
So you would have shot ISO 100 slide film?

James

@Nigel I'm glad you liked some of the photos. I liked some of them too. I guess part of the reason why I pushed the film, was to see if my shutter speed was going to be fast enough to shot without a flash. The other reason is just inexperience with a flash. But I have to say for the most part I don't regret the decision.
When my R-D1s went to Steve's Camera, I got pretty nuts after a week and picked up the Bessa R. I pretty much never shoot with a flash, so I bought some Provia and pushed it two stops. When i was shooting this event I felt like I needed a bit more security to ensure some keepers. I had already gotten in the habit of shooting the film at 1600.

I'm curious if I want to shoot slide film without a flash at 1600, what choices do I have?

Thanks,
James

I liked the shots and I like the grain at 1600. My issue would be that the grain might get out of control if enlarged much past 5x7 or 8x10. It is a distinctive look that I am sure others might try to emulate!

I am not a flash expert but I play with it a lot. Manual flash and non TTL cameras will get you where you need to be pretty fast 🙂

Short course is guide number over F stop equals distance with 100asa film at full flash. 100 asa, 100 guide number @ f4 = 25' for full flash. There is a lot to it but that is the bare bones basics to start with. if you like flash try a cheapo 285HV or any adjustable flash; hi output is better than low output, and some practice. PM me if you have questions.
