Enjoy Life.
It's fairly rare that one has a pleasant surprise when trolling the deep dark corners of the photo closet (shelf, cabinet, whatever). Usually there are batteries that have corroded in a body that we forgot about, sticky vulcanite on an old body or similar unpleasant thing waiting for us.
Today, however, was different. I was a bit bummed about getting rid of an old Hektor 28/6.3 that was in uniquely nice condition. I wasn't using it much, so it had to go, but I really liked that little lens. So, after visiting FedEx and sending it off, I decided to go through my photo area and look for my Dad's old Weston meter (he's been gone about 15 years now). I spotted the leather pouch he kept it in and picked it up.
"Hmmm....this feels heavy for a Weston!"
Now for the pleasant surprise...
Inside was a bakelite case, slightly hazy so I couldn't see inside. When I unscrewed it, there to my surprise was a Summaron 35/3.5 in terrific shape! Yes it needs cleaning but, as was all my Dad's equipment, it is basically pristine.
I'm really looking forward to being able to shoot this little lens on my M7 and M8, it will have a little extra meaning hanging off the front of my camera. My seller's remorse regarding the Hektor has evaporated as quickly as it came on.
When the sun comes up you truly never know what's around the corner. It's as if my Dad said "Hi" today.
