Think Tank Retrospective 5 - New Bag

I have the Retro 20 for my DSLR gear, and despite apprehension about the Retro 5 looking too much like a woman's purse, I ordered one anyway. I've had it for about a couple of weeks and it has become my everyday bag for RF gear. Down the road, I may also get the Retro 10.

doesn't look like a purse to me...looks alot like the domke 5xb, which seems to me like the near perfect bag...this might be close...or better, who knows?

Ellen - absolutely perfect for you... if my wife were a photographer, she'd already own it.

Joe - the Domke 5xb is clearly wider, with depth and height, so that it presents a profile a smaller messenger bag. The Retro 5 is almost as wide as the 5xb, but is 2 inches taller than the 5xb and has more depth (1.5 in) than the 5xb. Trust me, the overall profile of the Retro 5 is VERY different than the 5xb.

PS - I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but they definitely present very different profiles.

i've been carrying a bag of some sort everyday for years now...can't honestly say that i give the 'purse' look much thought.
if someone makes a negative comment about my bag i usually tell them it's where i keep my gun.

right now i am content with the domkes but i almost always keep my eyes open for a better working bag.

Finally I was able to handle one today at one of the local shops. I have mixed emotions... torn between it and a Domke 803 at the moment.

Tuu Mach, as they say in Singapore. I'm happy to meander in-between my pricey hadley billingham and my cheapy but oh so practical lowepro messenger...

i looked at one today, in person, and transferred my gear (from a domke 5xb bag) to the retro 5. it barely fit. the inside seems smaller then the 5xb. too many little inside pockets for my liking...nice looking but not enough difference from the 5xb to make the move.

I have been using it for a couple of weeks by now. It is the perfect size for my rff equipment and with enough space to put some some if I want to. The only complaint is that the bottom could be more sturdy or cushioned.
All in all is a great bag

A very, very fine bag also for a little Pentax DSLR-Prime setup.

I used very happy a Domke 5 bx but now I wanted something to bring my iPad with me:

To separate the iPad from the rest of the gang you have to use a self-made divider (or something bigger from an other bag). Blue one here.

You can carry a Pentax K7, DA21, FA43 and A100 Macro lenses. A medium sized book, some other stuff as you can see on the pic.

Im absolutely sure: The one who likes the Domke 5er canvas bags will love the TT Retro 5 in pinewood.

Rainer,

Here, in above post, it was stated that the bag would not accomodate an Ipad:

When evaluating this bag take into consideration the fact that (acording to Randy at ThinkTank) the pocket behind the main compartment is NOT big enough to slip an iPad into. Unfortunately. I just talked to Randy at ThinkTank and he said that is the #1 asked question. They are considering making it just a tad bigger so it will accommodate an iPad. It comes so close. Oh well, I know Joe will be disappointed.

Anyone else made their own divider? Be nice for Think Tank to re-think this one...

Thanks for the detailed photos!:)

not really...i don't care for the inside of the bag very much...the inside end pockets are in the way and it feels cramped.
it's a beautiful bag on the outside...
and it holds the same as my 5xb but seems tighter...

Glad I read this - as I was just about to order the TT-RS5, but am now a little concerned about comments that it's tighter than the F5XB.

Love my little Domke, perfect fit for my current gear (X100, EP3 w/- VF2 attached and twin lens zoom kit). Fits like a glove, but no room for the extra batteries, cards, filters, etc. I've had the TT-RS10 which was perfect for my dSLR kit (sold with that gear recently) and so I know what to expect, and can see the value in the money spent on the TT bags. Unfortunately, I can't try a TT-RS5 in the flesh so will have to buy sight-unseen. If it's tighter than my current F5XB, as folks claim here, should I cross it off my list?

Your help and any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

P.S., my primary criteria are low profile x2 -
1. thin width/depth (front to back)
2. inconspicuous, discreet, non-camera bag look

Cheers!!

Can do a side-by-side shooting this day if you like, but I think the TT will not bring you enough wider down the road. The Domke 5 is a kind of a wonder-bag. It fits inside more than you outside think.
That is not what the TT does. Myself I´m thinking about switching the TT into a Billingham Hadley Small...

So here we go.

TTR5 and Domke5bx with my iPad and a CD (to show you the dimensions)

My daily stuff. Here you can see why I call the Domke a wonder-bag... :D

Same stuff in the TTR

Plus the iPad

The trick with the Domke is to put some stuff in the bottom of the bag.

My two filters, batteries and sd cards

The TTR5 is a very fine bag and I m happy that with the selfmade divider my iPad fits into. But than its a great package. The Domke is, hm just a Domke. I cannot tell you why, but the Domke bags are so fine. I have no problem to sell the TTR in this moment and buy me a Billingham. But my Domke5? Only from my cold dead hands... :)

@TKH - all I can can say is both "Thank you" and "You are a true gentleman"....

....also you have save me much heartache and money. Living rurally I cannot handle these bags and so must buy from specification and review. On paper the TTRS5 seemed bigger in all the right places, but reality shows otherwise. I'll try stacking the bottom of the F5XB, but I fear I will still need something a little larger. So back to the Domke catalogue - though everything else in their line is far wider (F3x) or taller (F5XC). Hmmm...Billingham....the F2.8 and the other f-stop series looks interesting too.

Thanks again for your trouble it is very very greatly appreciated.

Your welcome. :)

Perhaps youtube can be helpful. There are a lot of videos of camera bags and the use of them.

I don't get you guys sometimes... Purchase RFs and 4/3 cameras for their portability, kvetch that SLRs are "too big"... then spend a C-note on what is essentially a suitcase and lug half a dozen lenses around with you all day. Ridiculous!

$10

Decide what 1 (one) lens you want to shoot with that day and be done with it.

Flame away :)

the 5xb seems to hold more, easily, than the retro 5...but after using the retro 5 and 10 and leaving the domkes home for awhile...the retros are easier to use, day to day, easier to pull out a camera and put it back in when you are on the move.
i love the domkes but i think i am a tt guy from now on.
the velcro silencers (sp?), the lack of a top zipper all make the tt experience more enjoyable.

@ back alley & TKH - Thanks a bunch for all your help - esp. since highjacking the OP's thread; though I hope it helps the next person trying to throw light between the Domke and ThinkTank offerings. As much as I enjoyed my TTR10 I think the smaller brother 5 is not the bag for me.

@TKH - Huge thanks again, I really appreciate all your trouble. And, yes, YouTube helped a ton. Very special mention to Mike (aka mathomas 1962). His videos have always hit the right note for me, and his most recent instalment, prompted by a question posed to him, has me 95% settled on the Domke F-10 for my purposes. Seems like the logical step up, size-wise, from my F5XB (though the F5 will remain in my custody until burial).

@NickTrop - For me it's a philosophy - maybe not a logically consistent one (and doomed to fail even the flimsiest of epistemological probings) - but my chosen way of life nonetheless. In my defence, this is why I have spent SOOO long struggling to find the right bag, as I prefer as minimal a profile as practical. Anyway enough apologetics...
