i have a quick and probably stupid question.

i have 40mm nokton and really like the lens, but have problem w/ the limited options of body which have built-in frameline.

now the question, is it possible to open the rf and replace one of unused frameline (eg. 135mm) w/ 40mm?
 
No. The Leica and VC bodies use a frameline mask that has ALL the frames on a single mask. An internal mechanism blocks out the masks not selected. You can remove frames from the mask by having that part of the mask blacked out, but cannot add frames that were not there before.

yes, 35mm is closer to 40mm, but 40mm lens will bring the 50mm frameline in body that doesnt have built-in 40mm.

ah, this is basically answer that im looking for.

so, basically its impossible without replacing the mask w/ one that already has 40mm line?
 
Use an Immerect finder, continuously variable from 35 to 135. Put some focus surface over the inner rails and find the point on the finder where the finder matches the image.

I would use two points, one for infinity and one for 6 feet.

Mine is marked with MMM white tape with MMM clear waterproof over it.
 
My 40mm Rokkor is on my M6 90% of the time. I've tested the 35mm frameline coverage and at least with this combination its more than 90%. As long as I frame for the coverage inside the framelines (inner border) I get pretty much exactly what it shows, I'd say about 98-99%, i.e. its so close that I do not even think about it, just shoot.

Obviously I have modified my lens so that it does not bring the 50mm lines. The modification can be done in 5 minutes with a small file.

I'd agree with this... the only time it is anywhere near off is at the closest distances the lens will focus. It is off, but not horribly.
