Contax to M-mount adaptor. Any experiences?

Hi,

I bought a Carl Zeiss Biogon 21mm/4.5 in old Contax RF mount recently. Would like to test the lens, but don't have the camera.

I am thinking about buying an adaptor for my Leica M3. . . but have no idea about it.

Anybody tried this? How much are they about and does it work?

I have seen a couple of those adaptors on the bay, but they are as much as about two Contax bodies....🙁

What do you think. Buying an adaptor or buying a Contax?

No experience, but Amedeo is the guy behind them. Everybody who has tried one says they are superb! I was flirting with the idea of one, but at the moment think I have too many leitz lenses
One important thing to note from his website:

This adapter let you use wideangle classic Contax rangefinder lenses and wideangle Nikon S lenses in your Leica M body, made from solid brass and chrome finish.

This adapter not is rangefinder coupled and you must use the distance scale of the lens for to focus.

The depth of field of a Biogon 21mm at f5.6 will focus from 1 meter to infinite and a Biogon 35mm at f:5.6 will focus from 2.5 meters to infinite so is easy use this lenses without rangefinder.

Contax C/Y or Contax RF mount?

Amedeo adapters are guranteed for usage from 50mm up.
Usage of wider Contax RF lens with his adapter can damage the M camera.

If you don't know already, most of the adapters that allow you to mount the Zeiss 21/4.5 Biogon for Contax RF or Contarex on a Leica are going to be non-focus coupled, so scale focus only (not a big deal w/super-wides like the 21mm Biogon). I haven't tried any of them, but they should work fine.

Some of the focus coupled adapters may work, too, but they require you to remove the rotating ring that protects the rear element.

adapting wide Contax RF lens to M can be tricky.

I had the Zeiss 21/4.5 Biogon lens and used it with one of Amedeo's earlier adapters on a M3. No rangefinder coupling as has been mentioned, but at 5.6 you have alot of DOF to scale focus. Great lens I didn't use much but wished I didn't sell it.

As questioned: My lens is in Contax RF mount. It is http://www.cameraquest.com/zeissbio.htm this one.

I think the wide-angle adapter is my deal. Did not knew it before and the price of 69$ incl. shipping is more than fair I think.

I have only seen the expensive 50mm + adapters...

No problem, that it has no rangefinder coupling. I wouldn't use it anyway.
I will definetely go for the adapter instead of buying me a super expensive Leitz Super Angulon.

Does somebody know how to order with Amadeo? Only per email?

The Contax version is OK, but the Contarex version has no aperture ring. That's why Contarex adapters don't exist for most camera systems.

I have one of the Amedeo wide-angle adapters that I use with the 35mm and 21mm Biogons in Contax RF mount. Works just great.

You are correct, of course. And I should know better since I use a Contarex from time to time 🙂bang🙂. I must have mixed up the converted Contarex Biogons in Leica mount w/various adapters for the Contax version (I really must have too many cameras).
