Hi

I was wondering about the numerous option of rewind cranks.
Are they usable on both the M2's and MP's ?
What do you think are the best ones among the ones available today?

There is the Leica...

and then the MJ ones for M2/M3 (MP?):

The Photo equip:

The CQ version:

any other ones?

I tried to order a MP crank from Photoequip some two weeks ago and was told that It's being discontinued.

Now this is sad...

The old crank I bought years ago for my M2 is a VERY tight fit on my MP.

Quite honestly, I don't think it speeds things up THAT much. That's why I bought only the one when I had two M2s and an M3: after trying it, I didn't really feel the need for another one.

Cheers,

R.

I tend to think that these are more M jewelry than useful accessories. However, I have many times been tempted to see if a Leotax knob could be fitted onto an M. That's a nice solution. (Shintaro has something like this)

I have the Leica MP crank for my M3. It looks great, but really doesn't add much to the rewinding, so it's sitting in the box now.

For functionality, I'd say the MJ Rewind Crank should work the best.

The current production mp rewind cranks don't fit on all M2,M3s (some work, some doesn't. All depends on luck) . I suppose they were designed for MP only.

Rewinds are like cars,
some are great, some a great deal less than great.
they really are different in how well they function and how comfortable and convenient they are to use.

No Kidding, I am a big fan of my new CQ Rewind. It makes a world of difference in my own shooting - but that is me. Your experience might be different. The current version fits the M2/M3, in about a month the new MP version will be available.

And not all rewinds are created equal. The expensive Leica MP rewind is a terrible design in my opinion, and so awkward and uncomfortable in use I prefer the original knob wind to it!

maybe I have fast fingers, but I like the rewind on my m2 and m3.......don't get me wrong, the rewind on my m6ttl is faster, but I am quite happy with the old style rewind.......it makes using my m2 and m3 "different" than when I use my m6.....same as the lever that winds the film (cocks the shutter), I love the style and feel of my m2 and m3 levers, but I think the m6 is better designed. I could probably say the same about loading film as well......personally, I think these subtle "differences" add to my enjoyment of using the different cameras........after all, they are all great cameras to use......

cheers, michael

The rewind knob is part of the experience. If we just wanted speed we'd be using DSLRs.

This evening I shot some photos of the roses in the garden with the M3 and the Summicron DR. Then, for the web, I shot some using a digicam (I had to use a Heath Robinson bracket to get a standard cable release to work on the shutter button).

The digital picture is impeccable. I didn't enjoy taking it though, and I derive no satisfaction from a job well done, since it was too easy.

There is something strangely satisfying about turning that knob.

Rewinding a M2/M3 can be a bit of a chore. Particularly if you are shooting fast and need to reload quickly. It takes a while to crank on the knurled knob. I have rewind cranks on most of my M2's and on my MP/M6 Millennium - a fairly large variety of them too.
The Leica one is sleek looking but does ot work very well - the knob is too small and as it is springloaded it keeps slipping from your fingers.
The new CQ version for the M2/M3 works very well.It also has a nice sleek look to it with the small protrusion for the set-ccrew. Tall enough grip so that it doesn't slip.
All rewind cranks can scratch the top-plate if you dont pull it up enough - but the CQ and the original "Magnum" crank is less likely to do so as the "rebate" on the set crew and crank are deep enough that it clears the top-surface.
Do you need one? Depends on how many rolls you are going through in a short time. The major benefit is that if you are only using one body - you can be ready to shoot in 15-20 seconds shorter time with the rewind crank the "regular" knob. I like them, but part of that is that I have used one version or another for the last 30-40 years on my M2's.

Starting the Buck a Month Rewind Rental Program!

Starting the Buck a Month Rewind Rental Program!

I'm glad I read this thead.
I did not realize how many users were skeptical about M2/M3 rewinds.

Immediately I will start offering the Buck a Month Rewind Rental.

Buy one and try it for a month.

At the end of the month if you don't want to keep it,
return the rewind and its hex key to get your full purchase back minus $1.
(that's $99 - 1 = $98 refund)

That translates to a month rental for a buck.

I doubt if I will get many back. :D

Does that mean you'll have "used" knobs for a discount price?? ;-)

...if any get returned...

I think the one main thing I like about the Leica knob is the style - how it fills in that top corner to look like the rest of the rounded side.
Stephen, I think if yours were more towards that look of better filling in the corner, I'd buy one quick. Your new V2 certainly has a better knob for grabbing than the Leica knob.

Trying to imagine the things at work, I think that the Leica design bay be nice to look at but ineffective. Too small, the knob seems also too close to the shaft to allow for a smooth movement. The QC and MJ may look the best functionality wise, but I also heard a complaint about them getting caught in straps/bags/coat.
Stephen's offer may be a great way to try them for someone in the US...

[edit] having another look at them, the QC model handle is more eccentric than the rest and it should definitely give it the edge in term of practicality...
