Some Philadelphia Hurricane Irene Aftermath

I took just one photo saturday night when the rain and wind started to get
bad.I was only going as far as my porch during the storm so it's a view
of my street in west Philly.

Today, I walked into center city Philly and saw that the Schuylkill river was
15 feet above normal because of runoff and the tide. While I was
shooting, mostly the river, the water level dropped by about a foot. By
the time I walked home, the river had receded maybe 3 feet and law
enforcement were allowing people down to the Schuylkill bank park.

Tomorrow is the first day of my final semester at Temple University as
an undergrad and I'm going to walk to school with the camera and see if
there are any storm effects on the way. Not much of the city proper was
flooded but there are downed trees and power lines here and there.

I would post more photos here but there are a bunch in the album and I'd need to do a much tighter edit of them all. After today, there are hundreds of RAW files to go through.

Erik, I haven't been down to south Philly on the Delaware yet but I'm sure she's still there. Being prior Navy, I'm wondering how much manpower went into slacking the mooring lines in the days prior to the storm's passage here. The tidal flow was abnormally high when the storm hit so the ships in the Delaware and in the Navy yard were probably lifted by about 10-15 feet. Even though we don't have an active naval presence here anymore there are still many ships in the yard in addition to the other facilities along the river with cargo, oil tankers and very large barges. A huge effort it seems.
