Hi !

How does your M6 sound at 1/30?

Does it have that buzzing sound like 1/15 and below after the "click" or is it more something like 1/60?

Here's the story: I've noticed, that sometimes my M6 produces that buzzing sound at 1/30 (maybe once in a 100 shots). My M3 fires 1/30 always with a clear buzz.

To all scientists 😎: whats the reason for that?

In all seriousness, hallucination? You might be listening too much. I can't hear the buzz of 1/30s on any of my Leicas: it's elided into a nice short chirp. The M6, M2 and M5 all sound subtly different, but 1/30s sounds like a slurred 1/60s. If your 1/30s is sounding screechy you might need it serviced - little lubrication remaining.

it doesn't sound screechy at all and to be honest, I can't hear a difference between 1/30 and 1/125 on my M6. The camera was in it's case and I took a shot and there you go.. the litle buzz. I haven't listened to it excessively, I was just lucky to hear it 😉

The standard shutter speed on the mechanical M series cameras is 1/50 - anything slower uses the clockwork escapement - at 1/30, you are only just hitting the escapement, so just a little chirp from the gears which sounds more after the shot as the clockwork resets itself. at 1/8 or so, you can really hear the gears whirring. At 1/50 (flash sync) and anything faster there is no engagement with the escapement, so no sound.

Simple really 😉

If it doesn't do it every time at 1/30, it could indicate that it's time for a CLA - the escapement could be dirty / gummed up

thanks john!

that is really funny, seems that my 18 year old M6 needs a CLA and the M3 which never has had any CLA runs smoothly. Guess that's the reason why some swear by the M3 🙂
