0.58 / 0.52 is not all that for 28mm

This is just my very subjective personal opinion.

I have been harboring the thought of getting either a R4* or leica 0.58 for use with my 28mm. At the moment, I am using an external viewfinder.

I tried R4a the other day and I wear glasses. I mean I can see the 28mm frame but not as easily or clearly as I hoped it'll be. The 35mm frame on the other hand is certainly going to be a joy for glass wearers.

So I think I will stick to external viewfinders.

Any similar experiences out there???

my guess is that you have thick glasses.

I have no problem seeing the 21 framelines on the R4's with my glasses.

Nah, my glasses is not thick at all but I think my glasses do sit a bit far forwards. That's the problem me thinks.

Its too bad modern rangefinders do not have built in diopter adjusting finders, like many SLRs do. I know some Russian rangefinders and, I think, some Canons actually did, but Leica and Cosina's Voigtlanders don't.

I wear contacts too but only sometimes. Don't find them confortable esp at the end of the day. Have to say my rf experience is quite nice with contacts

Its too bad modern rangefinders do not have built in diopter adjusting finders, like many SLRs do. I know some Russian rangefinders and, I think, some Canons actually did, but Leica and Cosina's Voigtlanders don't.

It has to do with the viewfinder optics in the FSU rangefinders being really really primitive. It's hard to build a high-eyepoint viewfinder with collimated rangefinder patch and projected framelines that is 30mm thick and has diopter correction.

If I were the OP, I'd see if a screw-in diopter correction eyepiece for the Nikon FA/FE/... works with the R4 the way it does with the R2 and R3.

I'm thinking this very thought when it comes to photography. I have a large bridge on my nose which makes my glasses stick out quite a bit from my face. The 35mm lines on an M2 are even too hard for me to see. I think it really depends on your glasses style and your anatomy. Short of lasik, my only other recourse will be to get a set of contacts.

Cheaper than an .58 MP too.

In any case, I have grown to like looking through an accessory viewfinder. There is nothing like it me thinks. Clear and bright. It also works with my plan of improving my scale focussing skills.

I have the 21mm and 25/28mm Zeiss finders. They are excellent for my 21, 24, and 28mm lenses; though I don't mind using my .58 Leicas with the 28mm lens. I do wear glasses (minus 4.25 or so diopters, plus some astigmatism). I can still see the 28mm framelines well enough. I don't see them all the way to the corners, but I have a sense of where they are. The 24mm framelines in the M8.2 are more difficult, so I use a 21mm instead, with 28mm aux finder.

I accually like using an external VF'er when shooting with either of my 28's. The internal VF'er on my M6 is not as bright as the Canon external VF'er, and the external VF'er gives me more of an all at once look that more closely resembles the wide angle look.

Even though the 28/3.5 Canon/Serenar is so tiny that there is no VF'er blockage, I still use the external VF'er. With my 28 Cron the blockage is substantial.
