The memorials in the pictures posted by 'Sparrow' may be:
(a) a memorial to someone who has died at the location (e.g the scene of a road accident) (usually obvious from the location);
(b) a memorial in memory to someone, an event or even an idea or concept - a bit like the park benches in the UK that are placed in memory for a variety of reasons.

Type (b) turn up in all sorts of places where a traffic accident (or similar) couldn't possibly have occurred and so their purpose can be determined from their location too. Many have explanations on them, but whilst I have photographed many on the island of Skiathos over the years, my greek is still very poor and I haven't determined what all of them are in memory of. The more significant memorials are often mentioned in local guide books and tell interesting stories. Hope this helps.

Catherine Labouré

Death and legacy

Labouré died in the Hospice on December 31, 1876 at the age of 70. Her body was later moved and is now encased in glass beneath the side altar in the Chapel of Our Lady of Graces of the Miraculous Medal in 140 Rue du Bac, Paris.[SUP][13][/SUP]

Her cause for sainthood was declared upon discovery that her body was incorrupt. She was beatified on May 28, 1933 by Pope Pius XI and canonized on July 27, 1947 by Pope Pius XII.[SUP][14][/SUP]

Labouré's feast day is observed on November 28 according to the liturgical calendar of the Congregation of the Mission, the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Paris. She is listed in the Martyrologium Romanum for December 31.[SUP][15][/SUP]

I'd forgotten this thread from many years ago! I've done some more pics of folk religion since then:

getright-with-god-2.jpg

This large roadside cross made of corrugated metal stands at the edge of a field on the west side of State Route 49, between Township Road 230 and Township Road 220, in rural Paulding County, Ohio.

It says: "Get Right With God."

There is an identical cross on US-30 in Van Wert County, Ohio!

Tug It Trucking is located on 13th Street (US-33/US-27), between Patterson Street and Elm Street, in the small town of Decatur, Indiana. The sign on the front of the company's garage says: "In God We Truck."

religion-car-1.jpg

I found this car in the parking lot in front of the Half Price Books store on Coliseum Boulevard in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The sides of the car are covered in Bible verses, spelled out with stick-on letters.
  • "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." - Revelation 20:15
  • "And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever." - Revelation 14:11
  • "There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth." - Luke 14:28
  • "Except ye repent ye shall all likewise perish." - Luke 13:3
  • "For all have sinned & come short of the glory of God." - Romans 3:23
I have always wondered if anyone is ever converted to evangelical Christianity by seeing things like this?
