Film availability

Got my eBay 500ELX back from CLA today and decided to buy some film for it. (I'm using bulk rolled 35mm TMax 100 at the moment.) Asmaller Henry's photo store did not have any 120 film in stock. The younger clerk I was talking with didn't know what 120 film was. After I asked for it, he looked confused and asked me if I was asking for 120 iso film. A senior store clerk intervened (he was listening in) and explained that there was not enough demand to stock it but they could order it in.
I then drove to a larger Henry's store in another town sort of on the way home and asked for 120 B+W film. The clerk asked what look I was going for, what iso. I asked what they had in stock, and after checking the shelf, the only choice was HP5, which was fine, but I was surprised at the lack of selection.
This was north of Toronto; downtown stores are much better stocked.

You are lucky, you should try getting 120 film here, we are way north of TO. Only one store may have it and then only because the university requires it for a course.

I'd have to drive a good long way to get any B&W film. B&H & Digitaltruth are my friends. Should get a nice box from Digitaltruth today!

I can walk to a couple of film stockists from work, easy enough, but I've no desire to when I can order online from a larger selection, for cheaper, and it's left waiting for me on my desk when it arrives. I don't think film stock is a sign of times with film, it's a sign of the times with retail in general.

I live in Newfoundland. I have to order EVERYTHING. There is one store that sells some B&W chemicals, but they charge $14 for a bag of D76 and I can get it on-line for $4. So, I order big, twice a year, and that usually gets me free shipping as well. It does take a bit of planning and keeping an eye on supplies because it can take weeks before an order comes in. C'est la vie.

Not meaning to highjack the thread, but could you say where you got the film from? Is it the new stuff or the old emulsion?

I live where there are plenty of local film sources (within two miles), that stock 35mm-8x10 and I still haven't bought a roll or sheet locally in over ten years. With the internet, I don't have to leave my desk to restock my film supply.

It's the old emulsion in new rolls (Rollei Retro 100). From Maco Direct.

I also live in Newfoundland and have to order all my film,120 and 35mm.The store Bojanfurst mentions for chemicals will price match any store in Canada.I've done it many times.I usually order my film from Freestyle now.

If online is a hassle Frank, just move to the S.F. Bay Area. Good stock and selection in the stores here.

where in the world are you getting APX100?

In Saskatoon we have good selection for 35mm and not bad 120 selection, especially Ilford products which even pharmacies still carry

Depends on your local camera store. My "local" store is about 100 kilometers away, in a medium-sized town, and the owner (a youngish chap in his 40's) is doing his best to serve both the digital and film market. He stocks a nice selection of 120 film (all brands) in both B&W and color. He also stocks "Impossible Project" instant film for Polaroids. It may cost me more to buy film there compared to ordering it from Freestyle or B&H, but I'll by film there as long as he stocks it.

As for your predicament, I guess there's always Freestyle or B&H.
