Contax G Planar 45/2 repair

Hello everybody,

I am having a problem with a Planar I took a little risk. The focusing is not working right. It is stiff midway and I wanted to try and open this lens to see if it can be fixed. Does anyone know of some pictures or any other instruction on how to do this in order not to throw the lens away ?

Have you talked to Zeiss/Oberkochen about this? They took care of a couple of C/Y lenses of mine a couple of years ago, but I am not sure if they do G lenses as well...

No, haven'T talked to them. I was under the impression that they were only serviceing C/Y MM lenses, don't know about Contax G. But it would be not really economical to do a professional repair since I guess that it would be easyer to get another one.

Zeiss did not make the lens and did not even design its mechanics - so they won't be able to repair it (at least not unless you reach very deep into your wallet and request a repair from the lab where they build the $100,000+ one-of-a-kind monster lenses they occasionally supply for Arab sheiks with).

But Kyocera should still be under EU legal servicing obligations, until next year - Kyocera never became insolvent, they merely stopped selling the brand, and like any still existing company they are required to provide parts and service for seven years after product discontinuation.

In Germany their service always had been contracted out to Tritec (who are service partners for many consumer electronics makers), and these are doubtlessly still servicing Contax equipment (and will presumably continue to do so until either parts run low or the last staff member trained by Kyocera is pensioned off).

I made the same mistake. The lens was loose so I thought I'd tighten it up. Taking it apart wasn't easy, and I gave up. Afterwards it wallowed for a couple of years on my bookshelf, missing screws and dusty. Finally I sent it to ToCAD America and they put it beautifully together, replacing missing parts. It took them 6 weeks,though.

Could the same company that makes the G lenses into M lenses also do such repair in Japan?

Sevo: I would really appreciate a link to somewhere that describes that EU 7 year legal servicing obligation. People sometimes refer to such 7 year service obligation in the US but that is simply a myth because no such legal requirement exists. I have wondered if it really is a legal requirement in the EU or a myth like in the US.

To the OP: yes, Tocad can help you out. But I would check and see if your local camera repair guy (who probably stays undercover) can help you first. He would be cheaper and quicker. Ask the local serious pro shooters where they get their repairs done.
