cv 50/2.5 question

I sold my CV 28/3.5 when I was still jumping around different focal lengths looking for what fits.
Have been shooting 50mm and 28mm for a while now and have been looking for another 28/3.5 since. They don't come by easy.
Found one on ebay last week....now I am waiting :)

Well, guess what? Missed out on the bloody Nokton 1.5!

Chris Crawford here got me also sooo excited that I actually popped over to MapCamera at lunch instead of waiting to go there after work. But when I arrived at the store, they only had 2 staff members who were very busy. At that time, the Nokton was still there. I waited and waited, but my lunch hour was quickly finishing and I had to get back to the office. So I left.

Later this evening I went back. And the damn thing was gone!

But I noticed an Ultron 1.7, instead. I was always curious about this lens, so I got that one! I hope it's an OK lens.

I think what people need to realize is that these "cheap" CV lenses are not that cheap. $300-400 is still expensive for a slow prime, just not when compared to Leica prlices. Some Canon & Nikon primes are in the $100-250 range. I think it is silly to think these CV lenses would not be capable.

I wanted to get this lens in Nikon RF mount, since they're on sale on Cameraquest. I've had pretty good luck with the CV lenses so far, I've used the 21 f/4 and 85 f/3.5 (nikon rangefinder) but I had to pass on the the 50 f/2.5 for the fantastic deal I got on the 50 f/1.5 Nokton and 35 f/2.5 here in the classifieds, which should be waiting for me at home right now...

Got the 50/2.5 in chrome in the mail last week.

It's made from brass so very heavy, and this is real chrome, not silver anodised.
It resembles the 35/2.8 Summaron real closely, also takes 39mm filters.

I've seen shots from it from Erik van Straten and found it impressive, it can be both modern and contrasty in color as well as more vintage in appearance in B&W!

It will be dedicated for my black paint Leica M3. Or maybe I'll team it up with the chrome M2 and get me a worn black paint 50/2.5 for the M3, that would be cool!

I like mine too. Even if it is the not so striking looking black version. I rather like it for environmental portraits.

Leica II, VC Color Skopar 50mm f/2.5, Tmax400.

I think the main reason why the lens was not very popular was the relatively high price, almost the same as the Nokton 50mm f1.5.

It is a lovely little lens. Most users don't know the classic Leitz shade 12585 fits the lens.

It is sharp at full aperture in close-up. The rendering of the unsharp back- and foreground is just gorgeous.

The lens has a very high contrast, higher than any classic Leitz lens I have. In b+w one should develope a bit shorter than usual.

Erik.

I think the situation is exactly like what happened the VC 28mm/3.5
Cheap and always around (or so we thought).
But when cosina decided to cease production... thats when ppl start buying them up.
I have both the 50/2.5 and 28/3.5. The biggest advantage for me is their size.

+1

The focusing tab is loose on mine -- I mean REALLY loose, like it's about to fall off. Anyone know how to fix it?

When it was all in one piece, though, it was indeed a lovely little lens.

Cheers,

R.

Dear Erik,

that was a valuable tip, on the 12585 hood!

I have a IUFOO hood for the 90 and 135 lenses that nobody wants to buy, it's too scruffy. Guess I'll be taking a hacksaw to it and shorten it to use on the 50/2.5. Took the test, clips on fine!

While the Leitz hood is great, they're also rather expensive. The generic 39mm metal hoods (both vented and non) are a much better deal at <$10 each. The biggest "shortcoming" of the Color Skopars is definitely the hood. The stock one is awesome in that it's so small (and holds the lens caps) but doesn't really offer much. Perhaps why these lenses are criticized a little unfairly as flare-prone.

Really? even by people who actually own them?

I just tried it; and yes it fits perfectly ... I could have saved a few quid there
