I think part of the OP's point is that film WAS mainstream not so very long ago.
It's amazing just how fast it's dropped out of the general consciousness.

Great article! . . . . . asked about film quite a bit, not just with my film bodies but often when using the M9, I'll be asked, "is that an old film camera." Always interesting conversations, sometimes brief, sometimes a bit longer.

It's been about 10 years already that it hasn't been mainstream no?

Why does it matter if it's mainstream or not? Frankly most people (non-photographers) look at my cameras and call them "real" and have more respect for them. I just like the results I get from a camera that I enjoy using. Film or digital. If I'm not enjoying myself, what's the point?

To us, it does not matter if it is mainstream. However, film users always seem to be shocked when someone asks them if they are using film and if they can still buy film. Since it is not mainstream, it is not sold in every deli, grocery store, pharmacy, dept store, etc like it used to be. That is why people who are not into photography are shocked to see film again. It isn't part of their everyday lives anymore.

As "dead" as film is claimed to be, a new developing shop opened up nearby a few weeks ago, making it four of five places in that area.
