I should add that my bid of $568 was already a hundred-plus more than I can immediately get my hands on, so the great camera-dealer in the sky was probably looking out for me. And my loved ones.....

With the money you saved you could buy a really nice Fuji GS690. That would give you really nice negs to print from. :)

Chris: Thank you. I got me a Hasselblad I'm happy with on that front. Plus a Fuji GA645 (not the same, I know). I just need the courage to carry the Hassie around New York. It sounds like a gunshot in the subway. With the money I save I could buy some groceries, though. That would go over well.

Go mad with the Hasselblad! Buy a bag full of film and have a Hassy month!

I'm recommending this to you because I really should do this myself. I shot a few rolls with the 503 this week, and just love the square.

Better still, buy a nice dinner out for you and the significant other. :)

Have you used the Hassy in a crowd? I used mine at a car show once, with a pro-shade fitted to the 50mm Distagon, and people were falling over themselves to get out of my way, thinking I was some sort of pro!

I was watching that lens! No bids though. I had one a while back. Got it with a IIF I think...from a seller who had no idea that the lens was any different from a 1.8. I was really excited about it...but in the end I was underwhelmed and sold it and kept a 1.8, which is one of my all time favorite lenses. So buy three 1.8s and pick the best! :)

I bought a Zeiss ZM 50/2 planar recently and sold that too...I wasn't overwhelmed as well. The canon 50/1.8 remains.

Keep looking especially at the Canon bottom-loaders and you might get lucky, but don't feel too bad.

It is a pretty one, though, I'll give it that.

I was watching, but not bidding. It is interesting to hear Dave say he used one for a bit, and then sold it off. This one or the Canon F1.4 is still on my radar screen.

I also had a Canon 50/1.5 and sold it. I much prefer my Canon 50/1.4, which I found to be a better lens, especially wide-open. Much smaller and lighter too.

I've had the 1.4 too. Also preferred the 1.8 over it!

I shot this with a new style (black focus ring) 1.8. I have a chrome one now.

I was also watching, just to see what it went for -- I'm happy with the one I already have. :)

I'm curious: Are there any Sonnar-type 50mm lenses you do like? Maybe you just prefer Planar-type designs?

(I sold my black Canon 50/1.8 a while ago, but now I'm hankering for a nice chrome one again. So goeth my addiction to 50s....)

Last week I bought me a new 50/1.8 in allegedly pristine shape having sold one when I got the 50/1.4. I'd been on the lookout for a while. That recent purchase was one reason I really couldn't afford the sonnar, but I had never seen one looking so nice, so couldn't resist trying. I loved the sharpness of the 1.8 and the size and wanted it back from the minute it was gone. But I've been using the Zeiss 50/1.5 on a Contax IIa a lot lately and love the look. My own 50 jones is such that the thought of having all three... somebody bring the smelling salts.

@dreilly are the chrome and black versions optically different?

@Chris I just decided, for Kodak's sake, to use a little of the money I saved to buy some more film.

Second chances sometimes come quickly, check the classifieds. Not the seller.

The chrome and later black-banded ones are, i believe, optically the same. Coatings probably evolved, however. I think condition would probably be more important than version.

for that price, you can buy a nice sonnar 50/1.5 CZJ + amedeo adapter AND half a nikkor 5cm f/1.4

But maybe there is no amedeo type which ends in LTM, just M.

So for a canon body maybe not an option, but for an m mount....

these LTM sonnar 50s are dear.

Yo stupe- I got the 1.4, I now have regained the 1.8, I now have the much longed for 35/2... and I have no desire for the 50/1.2 (the Noctilux .95 I would take though, if some rich fellow offered it to me as a gift....) So really it was only the 50/1.5

I plan on one day soon getting an Amedeo adapter for the lovely 1937 CZJ Sonnar I got but this doesn't diminish my other lusts, you see. I have the Nikon too, and one day would love an Amedeo for that, since I cannot seem to get a hold of an S2 that actually fully works. (My current one works to 1/60 and then on down everything's a B. I just guess the timing... I've practiced a bit with the camera open, watching the shutter. I also have the J-3 though I think its a bit off. I'm doing further tests almost as we speak (film to be developed).

So, you see, the two lenses I still think about are the Canon 1.5 and the pre-ASPH Summilux vers 2 43mm filter. Then, along with my extensive collection of SLR 50s, my life might be complete. Let's see: woman? check; children? check; a few accomplishments? check; working car? check; checks? No check. Oops. Have to work on that.

Thanks all for many great remarks!

I have the 50/ 1.8, 1.5, 1.2 and like the 1.5 best. The color rendering are nice, it doesn't flare like my 1.2, and it has interesting effects in the out of focus areas. It's heavier and feels solid, compared to a J-3 which I also have. To me, it's the best of all of these. I think the .95 and 1.2 go for a lot because of their "really fast" status. But the 1.5 goes for a lot because it's "really good."
