Does anyone here know whether the Leica Lens Holder M would be sensible to use with the heavy APO Summicron 90/2 ASPH?

It seems to me that the camera´s base plate will carry all the load, and thereby the wing you turn to lock the base plate. This item would be nice to have in situations where you are supposed to leave your bag before entering museums, for instance - but not if a heavy lens would drag the base plate lock out of shape.....

I have never used one but I have read that the major complaint is it makes a heavy and bulky package. I don't think there would be any problem of deforming the base plate. Good Luck. Joe

I'm sure it would work but you are likely to mar the finish of the lens barrel with such a set up with normal use over time. Somthing like that is best reserved for smaller lenses with a little cosmetic wear so that an addition mark or two from knocking around wouldn't really matter.

I've put the 90 summicron ASPH APO on it. I've also put a. Noctilux on it. Works just fine, but is pretty heavy :).

Great to hear about actual experience, and to hear that it works with no problems.

I do expect it to be heavy, and as some replies hint, the lens barrel could be marked by this treatment. As I expect to carry the lens holder loose in the bag and only use it for situations where security personnel tell me to leave the bag with them, I consider this issue to be of minor significance.

Thank you for all your answers.

Glad that's of help. It's a quite useful accessory, especially if you don't feel like carrying a camera bag (I try not to use bags when I shoot, so it's usually either one lens for the day or two with the carrier). I've found some interesting combinations:

1) 50mm with the CV 15mm.
2) 90mm with either a 28mm or a 35mm.

An interesting thing if you carry a 28mm with a 90mm is that the frame lines are the same, so you can compose for both in the same window without using the frame line selector.

YMMV,

I have one as well and I've put my 90 Apo and my Noctilux on it as well as my 135 Apo. Of the three that I mentioned, the 90 Apo seems to fit my hand best if I use the 90 as a grip to hold the camera over my head, for instance. The thickness of the Noctilux prevents a really firm grip in my smallish hands and the 135 is a little "long" and can bang into things unless you shorten the camera strap.

Note too that ONLY the regular base plate works with the lens carrier, NOT the Motor-M. It will work on the Leicavit turned in the opposite direction, but it completely blocks the cocking lever, thus rendering the Leicavit useless.
