And I do like your b/w conversion. How do you do it?

Thanks! I don't have one single process that works for all images. Most are converted to B&W with a gradient overlay in PS, sometimes I'll use PS's B&W adjustment layer tool. I find the adjustment layer works better if there's large areas of red in the image. Tonally, a reds and a blues encountered in real life, especially clothing have the same lightness, so a gradient overly will render them as the same shade of grey, so in this case I'd use an adjustment layer to get one of the colors to pop.

The gradient overlay can also be tricky, the less contrast in the original image, the more contrast the gradient will give to the B&W, and vice versa... it's a great tool for some images and craptastic for others.

After black and white conversion, I have a few PS actions I've put together to do a micro-contrast boost, an edge only sharpen and a slight high pass overlay. It took me a while to develop them, I was trying to emulate the results I was getting with Neopan 100.

Thanks for the info; I'll have to try that. I am frustrated by the fact that my digital b/w shots always turn out rather bland, and distinctly "digital"-looking. Have to fiddle more with the process, I guess...

Any excuse to post some B&W Nex 5n shots...

I agree that your b/w conversion process is excellent. What exactly is the gradient overlay that you mention? I can see the high pass, and the selective color b/w conversion (adjustment layer), both used to great effect, but what's the gradient overlay?

Great street shots!

Yes, I work in Photoshop all the time, and masking adjustment layers is an everyday thing. Maybe he's talking about a Curves layer, or maybe he's using one BW conversion for part of the picture and another one for other parts. I do that sometimes.

I've been using it with the CV 21mm/4 (and my Canon 35mm/1.8 LTM)

Mostly in BW, but now that I have built a color shift/vignette correction mask, more color will be forthcoming.

I'll be having some fun experimenting with the Sony Nex 5n and several Leitz, CV and Contax G lenses plus some OM Zuikos...

The focus peaking feature is very easy to use. And I don't miss a viewfinder with the waist level flip out screen...

Started a Flickr group for wider reference..join in!

I just received my NEX 5N yesterday, and posted my first shot below to the flickr group.

I used Leitz Elmar-C 90/4 and high rich monochrome setting for this shot
