FINALLY - Your mobile phone as a light meter

After some real long searching around the Internet, I've found a little application that can be used as a light meter on your mobile phone.
Here we go.

NOTE: This is for Java phones, NOT for Android or iPhone.

Application is called "Eksponometr" and can be found here.

Requirements: Mobile phone with camera, (mobile) internet.

0) Download and install app on your phone.
1) Take a photo with your phone camera of the area you want to meter.
2) Run Eksponometr.
3) Press 7.
4) Pick the newest file, it's the one you've just shot.
5) Press #.
6) This is the EXIF data. I think you know what to do with it.
Use 0 for help.

From now on, press * instead of steps 3 and 4 every time you want to read out the latest photo's data. It automatically picks the latest photo.

As I've said, this is for JAVA phones.
I know there are apps for iPhone, but this is the only one I could find for Java phones.

Nice for Java-based phones indeed. On the iPhone I use an app thats simple called Light Meter and it does not require me to take a shot anymore. Older apps did, this one is continuous metering, like a 'real' light meter.

I'm currently figuring out what kind of plastic to use over the lens so that it can work as an incident meter as well. That way I can middle between the reflective and the incident reading, 😎

BeeCam is ok. Accurate, but slow in use. None have replaced the gossens.

I use the Light Meter iPhone app as well and find it to be not only extremely convenient because almost always have my phone withbme, but also pretty darn accurate too. It obviously isn't as ideal as a dedicated light meter, but for my purposes it's all I need. I highly recommend it for those of you with iPhones.

I tried to use the Luxi incident metering app on my iPod Touch 4G but IOS6 does not permit installation of it, unlike my iPhone 4S with IOS7. Light Meter is another metering app that has the Luxi incident metering built into it, as an optional setting, this works well on on the iPod 4G. To trigger the Luxi function I slipped a piece of coffee filter paper between my rubber case and the iPod, over the front facing camera, the same paper I use when taking a custom light balance on my digital cameras. This mimics the effect of the Luxi diffusion bubble ($25) and enables the incident metering features.
I mention this because while the Luxi app works well on >iPhone 4S, using the iPod is cheaper and may be worth getting a used model just for the metering/DOF apps.

I have used, for Android, the "LightMeter" app in the Google Play Store:

Free and handy and it's fairly accurate when I've used it. (and it works with Android 4.4 - aka KitKat)

I'm using an app called Tiny Light Meter for Android on my S4. It has a really nice 'roll memo' function that you can set up (it asks for the number of exposures on the roll) so you'll have aperture and speed saved for each shot. It also has correction for ND filters etc, looks very good but it is accurate enough? Try it, it should be still free!
