Can you believe this?

Looks a reasonable Zorki 1 and Industar 10 to me. At least he's not saying it actually is a Leica and it's not based on a Zorki C or FED 2. Seems to be a market for these things, the bizarre and obvious fake ones fetch absurd prices but each to their own I suppose. It's tempting to say fools and their money but that's a personal view.

Interesting that on this one they've bothered to re-engrave the base, which is very unusual and yet they've based on the Zorki, with its obviously-wrong shutter release, rather than a FED. I can't make out the rewind release lever markings to see if they've been re-done.

Ah, it's all in the marketing. The seller first states it's a Leica, and only at the end of the description does he say it's a copy, but most bidders won't look that far. Very deceptive, but effective.

That's what I meant, but didn't quite word things right. The seller should have put the word copy right after Leica.

Instead, it reads like the word "copy" is being used to indicate a specific instance of the product as in, "FSU cameras and lenses can be excellent if you find a good copy".

Well, it certainly is a bit pricey, but is one of the best-cosmetic-condition fake Leicas I have seen. I think it's selling so high specifically because it is a nice example of the classic Russian fake, rather than the really egregious ones that show up so often. It's strange that now the various obscure Japanese Leica copies seem to be fetching a lot more than the genuine article. I suspect this is the same trend.

Arh calm down
Its says Leica copy in the heading

LEICA CAMERA + LEITZ ELMAR 50MM 1:3.5 F3.5 LENS + CASE - LEICA COPY

But I agree It should have said "Fake Leica" since that's what it really is

Wow!

Wow!

Hi (again),

25 bids and sold for UKP266 or about USD 435, yes that was two hundred and sixty six pounds sterling...

I'm going to take a pill and lie down in a dark room for a while ;-)

Regards, David

Wow. That's a lot. Poor buyer...
A wild guess is that the buyer may not have been a fluent English speaker and didn't see or understand the 'copy' part.

Hi,

Well, that's ebay for you. I guess we'll now see a run of expensive fakes. I wonder if I can sell my old Zenit as a Leica copy? Wait a year and they'll just have "Leica" on a bit of sticky paper over the engraving on the top and still they'll sell.

Regards, David

Here's a really egregious fake.

The seller doesn't have any other cameras listed, so maybe he just doesn't know. I sent him a gentle email message, and I'm interested to see what kind of reply I get. :)

Cheers,
Dez

Hi,

A great pity the forgers don't offer a custom alteration service for cameras. They'd make more money and no risk of the market dying on them or the police swopping.

That's already been done, David.
