Hi,

Can anyone recommend a person to repair my M4 in the Toronto area? I have been trying to locate David Yau who was recommended by a friend but get no replies from the phone and email messages I left for him so I assume he is no longer doing repairs. Thank you in advance for your help.

Cheers,

J

Try Gerry Smith at Kindermann (Toronto). I've had two M4's serviced as well as a 35 mm AA Summilux. Gerry does outstanding work, is great to talk to and his turn around time and price quote won't disappoint (at least not in my experiences).

Yes, Gerry is very good. Turn around time for me at least was reasonable and so was the price.

I sent my elderly M2 to Gerry a few years ago and couldn't be happier.

I had David Yau do some work for me in January of this year. It's possible he may be away on vacation as he was when I first tried contacting him. I was very happy with the work he did at a reasonable cost.

David will be back next week. I take my MP to him for any work needed and he also works on other cameras as well.

Yep, Gerry Smith gets my vote, if it has to be local.
I've heard lots of good things about David Yau, but haven't had any actual experience.
Otherwise go to Youxin Ye. Cross-border mailing isn't that bad.

FYI - I had my M7 serviced by Gerry Smith about a year or so ago - he's VERY good yes but he's also semi-retired - keep this in mind as this means, to him, shortened hours (he's not "in the office" every day of the week).

I've also had mechanical cameras serviced by David Yau who has never disappointed me. I've had both M's and my Rolleiflex serviced by him and both came out just fine :)

Cheers,
Dave

David is Wetzlar trained (as a Leica employee iirc) and speaks fluent German as a result. Not that it makes a diff ;) Will be a sad day when David and Gerry 'retire'. In that case, maybe try Bodo at Halton Camera Exchange (no experience with his work tho but great guy)

I always wondered about that and often thought of approaching David to see if he's willing to train someone else (i.e. me) - I always wonder what will happen when these guys disappear... it's like the Jedi... only not.. :)

Hi Everybody,

What a great site. Thank you so much for sharing your advice, I really appreciate it.

Cheers to all,

J

There is definitely a market for quality Leica service in the GTA and greater area. May not be a full time job but enough I think to make it worthwhile.

Both gentlemen, and they really are, have worked on cameras for me. Very satisfied with their work.

I am not sure if I have the right contact information for David Yau, I got it from a RFF thread dating back to 2006.

I called and got a non descript answering machine and my email wasn't responded to.

Can someone post or PM the correct contact info?

Thanks

The information I have via his business card is as follows:
416-494-8988
I'm not sure of this email address but my last correspondence with him was as of last year November 16. At that time he was using d(dot)yau(at)rogers(dot)com as the email address.

Cheers,
Dave
