I have my negatives bound in ring binders. After packing away the fluoro-tube walnut light table my father built years ago, with no thought about weight or bulk, I wanted to check through a few films today and could not face setting up the machine and removing pages from the binder.
I removed my original iPad from its black Apple rubber case. I then cleaned both. I launched Adobe Ideas, a wonderful drawing program I use for teaching, and I clicked on the eraser so that I wouldn't be making black marks on the white sheet. I chose this app as it won't call up the keyboard at all. Except for the left-most negative which I couldn't get a complete view of, it was a very handy way to sit comfortably and look for an image, slipping the iPad between the leaves and seeing 3-4 6 frame negatives at once.
The iPad 2 would probably be best for this, being thinner and more easily detached from its 'case'. There was a thread recently where a frequent question from the non-users was "What is an iPad for?" Here is one more use in photography.
