Just upgraded to IE9. Unable to post anything in message boxes on RFF, and can't figure out what settings to change. Anyone else have this problem? (and in case you're wondering, I'm using Firefox to post this thread).

I don't miss managing website development. IE and browser compatibility is always a pain. With the older BB code here it will probably require a little work by the Head Bartenders team.

same thing when I'm on my iPad 2 using one of the non-safari browsers -- no PMs, no reply on the boards, etc. it used to work fine, though -- not sure what happened...

Writing from Firefox again. Let me be clear about the problems I've encountered trying to use RFF with IE8 and now IE9: I can view the site, and threads, but can't post anything, either text or photos, in the reply boxes. Text shows up in black type, barely visible, and RFF doesn't recognize it. Same thing for pasting a link to a photo. If there's a setting on IE that needs to be changed, I don't know what it is. But it looks like there's a compatibility problem between RFF and the newer versions of IE; I never experienced these problems w/ older versions of IE.

Internet Explorer (all versions) security glitches,
are probably the # 1 target of hackers.
Switch to Firefox or Chrome and you will have less chance hacker problems.

I'm amazed that people still use IE as a browser, when there's so many other better ones. Firefox and Opera are my favorites.
On a bit of a tangent, after having one Windows computer go to the "blue screen of death" (they're not kidding), and another that gave me a "fatal error" and somehow repaired itself (or so it thinks) I downloaded the free Ubuntu operating system and installed it on the deader PC. Wow, what a neat OS. This was the first OS that I ever installed, and it went quickly and easily. Once the wife learns it, we'll be going to this OS on all our computers from here on out. Windows is just not worth the trouble for me anymore. We gave up on IE years ago. Soon we'll be totally Microsoft free!

I seem to have missed those posts. I use Firefox at home, so there's no problem. But I have been known to check in to RFF from work, and there I'm now using IE9 w/ no other options. I guess I won't be posting threads or photos during lunch break.

Steve, some of us who have to, as part of our job, support people with various computer skill levels, don't have a choice.
Even if I personally won't touch IE with a 9-foot pole, I still have to be *very* familiar with IE just to solve problems that would never materialized had the user been on Firefox.
Good for you for trying Ubuntu. The world of Linux OS today is a very exciting one, for people who are not opposed to the idea of having freedom to choose, that is 😛

In all seriousness, IE9 is a great browser, there is no reason anything standards-compliant should not work well on it (unless there is a lot of Javascript involved, then Chrome is better but Firefox still isn't). The problems really start to kick in with what they call Compatibility Mode. It has some logic to detect if your site has had crap added to make it work in IE7/8 and if that fails and it still goes into Compatibility Mode all bets are of as to what features may an may not work.
I love my job, but it would be better if IE5, 6, 7 and 8 had never existed. 😎

Yes Firefox is great. I'e had the same problem with the last couple of versions of IE (not being able to post to this site). Unfortunately, Firefox is a lot more incompatible with websites (esp. corporate sites like credit companies and utilities) then IE. So I use both.
I really don't do not understand the dissing of IE, I use it all day at work and when I have to at home. I like the feel of Firefox more but i wouldn't call it an improvement on IE.

I suspect many of the people dissing IE are technical folks like me for whom IE makes (work) life a living hell. We do a lot of work so that you don't need to know just how crappy IE is. I'm a programmer, and I can't begin to tell you how many hours have been wasted making web sites work properly with IE. I don't know how many times I've developed a web page that works beautifully in all the other major browsers, but then some aspect of it breaks or looks crappy in IE and does so differently in different versions of IE.
IE 9 is an improvement over prior versions, but not everyone runs it.
All of this is not your problem, or fault, of course, but it's a reality in the software world. Thus it's the source of a lot of griping.

I've been using Linux Mint KDE currently version 12 and have had no issues whatsoever.
Back in my Windows days Internet Exploder gave me nothing but problems. Don't miss it at all..

I'm about as barely computer literate as one can be and still able to post.😕 ("Sign your name or make your mark")😕 When I upgraded to the handy-dandy new IE version my RFF world came apart. I though I was or had done something wrong. Been banished into cyber-limbo by the Mod's . After much hand ringing and gnashing of teeth I fired off a email to Brian S. The reply was simple(good thing), "move on over to Firefox" and now all my problems are over😀. I can now go back to fondeling my Canon IIs2 and my Leica envy. 🙄

Braver is correct. The default in IE9 is "compatibility mode on". Switch it off and everything should be OK. I run IE9 on windows 7 64bit using RFF with no problems. You can then switch it on for only the few sites that cause problems. Its under the tools menu item in IE9.
As to the dissing of IE9, I've been writing websites which work on all browsers for many years. The people dissing IE are kiddies who are too useless to know how to make a website cross browser compatible in a simple and easy way. They learnt the Firefox way and know nothing else. They are a bunch of whiners.

So I just turned off Compatibility Mode in the Tools drop-down menu in IE9, and it had no effect in RFF. I still can't post photos or text. Suggestions?

This is a tricky one because RFF does work fine in IE9 for some of us. So I can only guess you have some settings or one major possibility is your version of JScript (the Microsoft implemetation of javascript) is not current.
So if your Operating system was installed a while back(not recent) I would suggest downloading and installing the current version of JScript for your OS from Microsoft which may sort the problem.
