Good/Bad lenses for the Xp1

Hi folks,

I thought I start a thread like this so we can share info on which lens works well with the xp1 and which one does not.

For me, so far, the Voigtlander 40mm SC f1.4 has been awesome. Super sharp. One thing though, I get different contrasts when I shoot it without the uv filter and when with the uv filter. My uv filter is multi-coated.


And my Konica Hexanon 90mm has been very disappointing. I have had goo experience with it on film, but for some reason, on the XP1, it's soft to no-end.

I also tried my Nikon 50mm f1.2 and Minolta 50mm f1.7. Both were fairly good. The Nikon 50mm is soft by nature. It does seem to un-balance the camera.

The Minolta is bit soft as well, but still quite pleasant. It actually feels nice and balanced on the xp1.


What have you guys been using?

Next, I am gonna get an EOS to M adapter, so I can use all my EOS or EOS-mount lenses. One of them is my Pentacon Six 50mm f4. I really hope it will work well. I really like that lens.

Thanks for starting this thread... I have the cv 40 1.4.. Currently I am planning to wait for the Fuji m mount announce before I decide to do anything here. The Fuji 35 f1.4 I have with the xp1 is just stellar, so in no rush to go legacy lens route yet 🙂.

You can safely mount the Summicron 50/2 DR on it.

I don't find my Nikor 50mm 1,2 soft. In fact its sharper than my 1,4.

Any clue as to why the 90 hex is sharp on film and not on the x-pro 1?

I just put a Pentacon 6 50mm f4 on my fuji via 3 adapters. Pentacon 6 -> EOS, EOS->M, M->X.

Quality still bit unsure.. need some more testing. I have had very good experience with the 50mm on my 5D.

Ok, just tried it out. The Canon 100mm L f2.8 Macro lens work great on the Fuji X-Pro1 😀 Well, no aperture, otherwise, sharp as ever.
And no IS, plus the throw is so short, really had to finess.

that is disappoiting and must be Fuji specific, as it works perfectly on the GXR and NEX 🙁

what do you mean no aperture?

Canons EF lenses have electronic aperture control. Unless you have an adapter where you can dial in the aperture (there are nikon adapters available that can do that on the NEX), you have no control over it and it stays where it was set by the last EOS body you used it with.

All my Leica M-mount lenses work fine - I've been able to mount from the Zeiss ZM 21mm, 25mm, the Leica 35mm, 50mm and 90mm just fine.

As an aside, I really don't care about corner sharpness (that's just me mind you) but the Zeiss 21mm seems to be the perfect "35mm" field of view (even if it IS really more like 33mm)

I've been happy using my Contax G lenses on the XP1 via a Kipon Contax G to FX adapter. Sample image below taken with the 45mm Planar.

Those Contax lenses by Zeiss are ridiculously sharp - I have always loved them !! I can only imagine what the 21mm must be like on the X-Pro1 - that is, IF it can be mounted on it..

It's possible that the X-trans sensor layout accentuates aberrations in some lenses or that the AA filters on ther cameras act a little like microlenses. Everything works on the NEX (except the 35mm/1.4 ASPH, which seems to mechanically bind somehow). Focus peaking makes very fast work, but to tell the truth, I rarely use adapted lenses unless it's for making videos (the 57/1.4 Hexanon is fantastic for that - sharp, light, and fluid to focus).

I don't have the 21, but I don't think it would fit on the XP1. I managed to mount the 28mm Biogon, but the rear element guard fins were trimmed off earlier when I used it on an m43 mount camera.

I cut off the guards with a pair of snips. Some people have used a dremel tool for a neater cut. The rear element still protrudes past the adapter base when lens is at infinity focus position. I have avoided using he lens at this position, but might be OK. I should find out the distance from the closed shutter to lens mount base to be sure it is safe. One ebay merchant that sells the Kipon C/G to FX adapter notes that the 28 is OK if the rear guards are cut off.

I wonder how does the Contax 28mm f2.8 compares to the Voigtlander 28mm f2 ?
