I wouldn't have realized but Google is honoring him on the home page today. So, salute to a master, and -- sorry HCB -- to probably the most famous street photo of them all, Le baiser de l'hôtel de ville.
 
I read that the famous l'hotel de ville photo was staged, not spontaneous. Can anyone confirm?
 
the info with the feature says the photo was, indeed, set up but the romance was real. the two young actors broke up not long afterwards.

Yes, it was staged. It was done for a Life magazine article. Years later Robert Doisneau was sued by the models, but had model releases.

FWIW my personal opinion is it doesn't matter one bit if staged or not. For news photography, yes. Everything else, no, not at all. A good photo is a good photo, and what the photo doesn't show simply doesn't exist in the photo, only in our minds.
 
The first one that made a big deal about it not being staged, was Robert Doisneau himself ... but the article claimed otherwise.
