For the shootings of the movie "Barry Lyndon" Kubrick demands each scene and everything to be shot under the natural lighting conditions of its period. A very hard task for the halls to be illuminated by candle light only. Two Zeiss lenses with apertures of f0.7 are ordered.

The following clip, especially after the mid portion illustrates the unusual rendering of these lenses and please note the daylight and outdoor shootings too (actually I liked them better):

(In case you are interested, the other episodes of the same movie are right after the end of this clip.)

This is so wonderful. I am a great admirer of Kubrick. His self portrait was my avatar here for a time. I've never seen Barry Lyndon. I had no idea what a masterpiece it is. Thank you, thank you.

The two lenses were actually not custom made by Zeiss. AFAIK they were previously owned by NASA for astrophotography purposes but they didn't need them anymore so he bought them and had them modified to work on movie cameras. Here's a bit more about the modification:

I'm sure this has been discussed at length on this forum so if you do a search you'll probably find more information.

Barry Lyndon rocks.

If one in every ten shots I take could even remotely compare to the rendering in the Lyndon scenes, I'd be happy as a pig in mud. The only time I am truly happy with my color shots is when the colors have this subdued pastellish look like the Barry Lyndon colors...

Thanks for posting those links. Did not know these clips yet, much appreciated!
