Hi, Mark from Plustek here.
Yes you are correct, the only difference between the OpticFilm 7400 and 8100 is that the 8100 ships with SilverFast 8.
If you purchase a new OpticFilm 7400 before the end of June 2012, you are entitled to a free download of SilverFast 8 from the SilverFast website.

Sorry to hijack the thread (I see he got his answer though), but will the 120 scanner be better than the 7400/8200 etc for 135 aswell? I'm sure a simple search would give me an answer but I'm in a hotel room surfing with the phone.

I am expecting the OpticFilm 120 to have a higher 35mm resolution and Dmax than the OpticFilm 7400/8200. Pricing has not been set but they will NOT be similar in price.

Shaken, so blurred
I do hope not horridly expensive, though. I don't think anyone is expecting cheap in an absolute sense but serious over-pricing wouldn't help anyone. For example, if it were more than twice the price of the best flat-bed scanner around then that would probably be too much for a high initial volume of sales. There's enough anticipation around that "well-priced" might generate more absolute revenue through volume than "gouging for per-unit margin" could return. I, for one, am prepared to buy - more or less on trust - unless the initial price is so high that I'm forced to pause and wonder whether I can or want to afford it.I am expecting the OpticFilm 120 to have a higher 35mm resolution and Dmax than the OpticFilm 7400/8200. I agree - the price of the 7600i that I have was a major factor in my choice - especially as I chose it over the Epson V7xx which can already scan 120. The other decider was use of space. I too would pre-order a 120 scanner if the price isn't so far from the 7600.

If the scanner has a better dynamic range than the 135s, then it will be very interesting for those initially looking for a used minolta scan multi pro.

Is this the case also if I purchase the OpticFilm 7600i?

I'm not into silverfast either .. I'm happy with vuescan. So I could buy a previous model and save money?

I bought the 8100 the other day. Fairly happy with it. As far as colors/DR/tone it's not as good as my old minolta scan dual IV, but in terms of resolution/sharpness it's pretty good. The manual frame advance is nice and simple - just the way I like it. Overall pretty happy for the price.
One of the cool things about it is that it's tiny, and it's SUPER SILENT. My girlfriend can sleep in the same room while I scan. HUGE advantage for me - both the epson v600 and minolta dual scan I had previously were noisy - especially the minolta.
Silverfast is whack, I use it with vuescan (which is still pretty whack, but less so than silver fast)

I've a 8200i (the one with higher price right) now for testing cos my g/f is a journalist and got one for a review.
I love how much more I see on a frame now compared to my previous flatbeds (8800f & V500). It's so detailed!
But people, could you think of selling that thing w/o silverfast to get the price down for people that use Vuescan?
Silverfast is a pain to use and gives me inconsistent results. There is way too much auto going on after the scanning, the results sometimes look completely different (I mean absolute completely) from the preview!
I tried for a week then I bought the Vuescan update needed to support this model. I was shocked how good the results looked! The difference was even greater than on my V500 with Epson SW vs. Vuescan! Also it is faster scanning. You could argue that I'm too stupid to figure out silverfast, maybe I am: but no software should be that level of hard to figure out.
Btw: sorry when I come across as I'd make cheap promotion for them, but you can check I'm in no way connected to vuescan.

I couldn't even find the serial number for my version of silver fast ANYWHERE in my plustek box/cd/manual etc. Like there was literally no serial number anywhere. I tried to make a few test scans and they all came out with the big silver fast logo all over them. Useless company and product. Vuescan at least has some consistency.
