New Friedlander

Thanks Gary for the heads up!

I was really impressed with his prints from America by Car, when the gallery last showed his work.
 
Not much of a fan concerning his recent work but I loved going through his archives. Saw many photos I've never seen. Of course the man being in his 70's, to be able to continue to shoot a project is commendable.
 
Thanks for posting that link. The man continues to inspire me as he has for a very long time. I was in a group exhibition long ago and some of his were there. I think I'd only just heard of him.
 
A bit of a let down, I have to admit. However, it goes with the whole overloading a photo with information phase he's been in for many many years now. I like the older work better.
 
I would be careful when it comes to judging these because he is a monster photographer, very influential, witty, etc. So I'd want to take a much closer look and not make any final judgment based on little images on the internet. Having said that, the photos made me sad. The images seemed like the product of someone, perhaps a student, imitating Friedlander rather than the product of the real Friedlander. Not much new, but less intense than older work yet not more subtle. At least that was my first impression. I hope I'm wrong and I hope that this is not the product of an great master getting old and repeating himself.
 
I'll withhold comment on whether this work is up to his usual genius until I've actually seen it and given it some time. It certainly is a return in some ways.
To an urban street environment and to the 35mm camera. But his work has often times referred back to earlier themes and to earlier photographers.
I will say this, though. He has surprised, challenged, and turned me around 180 degrees so many times that if I don't "get" something he's doing right away, my first tendency is probably to question myself.
