EOS apprehension

Analogue EOS cameras were once a dream for many photographers. Now they are unloved and are being sold by the bucketload at flea markets and car boot sales. If they are in the sub 5 Euro category I usually buy them.

Today I finally could get a working (body, lens, battery) Canon EOS kit together. Total cost to me: 2 (two!) euros. That's less than a roll of film... And the really fun bit: There's still a roll of film in it! 22 shots have been taken. Wonder what's on it... Probably no long lost WWII pictures 😉 but I still think it will be fun to see them.

Haha, yeah, I know that excitement! I call those 'Pizza Cameras' - cameras that cost less then a pizza and a coke. Even if you buy on Ebay, you can find bodies for just pennies. I got a 1000FN for something like 1,50 Euro...

The only EOS film models that seem to keep their value are the low number, high end models like the EOS 5 and EOS 1. Anything 10 and up is just about worthless these days.

Sure, a 1000FN might not be up to par with the EOS 5 in terms of functions, but if you use a halfway decent lens and take your time, it'll produce a more then adequate shot. Or at least better then the $5 plastic cameras that are sold on Ebay 😀

I have three now, but as said, only lower spec models.

- EOS 1000F (working)
- EOS 100 (does not work)
- EOS 300 (does probably work but I don't have CR2's lying around)

The 100 and 1000 I found at flea markets. The 300 came with a 28-80 zoom and was free (gift from a colleague).

The local supermarket had some CR5s for 1 euro each, so I tried those in the 100 and 1000 with the lens of the 300.

I just occasionally go to local flea markets, preferably the big ones. There are usually people there clearing out the attic, so prices are rock bottom. It's fun to go out camera hunting 😉

I also frequent flea markets, but now it has been a long time as it just isn't worth it. Mostly you find box cameras for about 10-15 euro, the occasional no-brand slr for 50 euro and if it is something like a Canon or Nikon it goes up to 100 euro. And more than often they look like they spend their days in the trenches during 14-18. So it is very rare I come back with a camera.

at a flea market, the guy was asking for big bucks for Nikon
stuff but the Canon stuff not that much, so you can make out better on
some of the old film camera's, but not all of them

Yes they do seem a bit unloved, when I was a staff photographer for a local paper they used Eos 5 I thought they were great cameras. I'm pretty sure they were quite expensive new but now can be had for £50. I stil have two 1vs and a 3. The 3 was £100 as new boxed the 1vs were £120 and £200 (i think) considering the 1v is Canons equivalent to the Nikon F6 they are cracking good value!

One of my favorite gimmicks is the "Eye-controlled AF" on my Elan IIe and other "e"-designated models, a feature not seen even on today's techno-marvels! It actually works pretty well, and kinda spooky. A lot of these bodies are dirt cheap too.

I believe the EOS 300 is the same as the Elan in the U.S. If so, look for the BP-300 battery pack/ grip that allows the use AA batteries.

eos 30v for 30 euros, including lens, battery grip filter. it was, and in a way still is (eye control focus point selection), the most advanced film slr in the market. BTW, Canon film stuff, whether eos or fd, is amazingly cheap, yet excellent gear that was the best you could get.

Every time I use my Elan 7E the eye control focus point selection amazes me. Alas, this camera sees less use than it should.

Great cameras and lenses and still going dirt cheap but sometimes the cost of a battery or a pair can be a shock. One of mine takes a 2CR5 and another takes two CR2's...

This is my EOS lineup:

I got the 300V for £6 and the 10 for £1. I bought the EOS 5 from new. Now they go for around £40 body only...

I keep mine on the EOS 5 most of the time. Works great on the EOS 630 as well. Even works as a great zoomed prime on my 450D, but let's not talk about that 😀

I bought a used eos 650 and replaced it with a620 less than 75 us total gave them both to nephew telling him to sell the 650 to by what ever he could.I thought the auto focus was to slow in low light with a2.8 seemed to hunt to much and the battery life was to short.Replacement was an EOS1 with bp e1 which Istill have and now a EOS1V with bp grip .I like using aa batterys much better. I did have an Elan 7 with bpack which also went to nephew with same instructions sell 620🙂

I've got an EOS 30 (Elan 7E) I still occasionally use. Bought it for 30 euros.

As mentioned before: Why Canon never implemented ECF in their digital bodies is beyond me...

I would imagine they are keeping it for when sales start dropping. Now they are selling us more megapixels / better high iso performance. When they plato with this marketing, maybe ECF will come to play....
