Some questions about Nikon Scan software

I need some help and advice. I am hoping to run Nikon Scan software and currently looked into two options:

1) I am running on Windows 7 64 bit on my PC and want to install and run Win XP on a external HDD. Is it possible? If yes, will it be a tedious job?

2) I have a 13in MBP running on the latest upgraded OS X. Since getting a PC, I have used this laptop very little. I am very sure the Nikon Scan is not able to run on it as I have tried. I checked that installation CD has OS X 10.6.7. I have a crazy idea to reinstall this older version if Nikon Scan software is supported and use this MBP as a dedicated scanning laptop. However I have researched about this but there are conflicting user feedbacks that Nikon Scan cannot run on 10.6.7. So before I go on reinstalling everything, can anyone help me on this?

That will entirely depend on whether XP considers the interface as internal - in my experience it does not take kindly to running on what it supposes to be a removable disk.

But why would you want to do that? The Nikon scan software works perfectly fine with Win7 64. No difference to Win7 32 - that is, the general Win7 driver installation issue is the only thing you have to work around.

Just down loaded a version of Nikscan and are using on my Windows 7 32 machine, works fine, but is not the greatest scanning software.

Have you checked this thread There are some tricks that make your Nikon Scan runs well on WIndows 7 64bit.

Hi, Can you share us your experience that lead you to that conclusion? Seems that there are two groups that support either Nikon Scan or Vuescan LOL. I am with Nikon Scan most of the time.

Hi Trung, I don't really like either. I have had my greatest scanning success with Silverfast.

I'm sure if I sat down with someone who is proficient with either it would make a difference.

I don't go anywhere near the supplied scanning software with either of my scanners. The relatively inexpensive Vuescan is easy and actively developed.

Update

I downloaded the Nikon Scan 4.0 software and installed it in my PC running on Windows 7 64 bit and it runs. I did not use the "get around method" mentioned earlier in this thread. No rewriting of installer software or whatsoever. Just download and install only. Now everything works like a charm.

Apparently I blindly believed what the Nikon website wrote and thought NS 4.0 is not compatible with Win 7 64 bit so never tried to install the program.

Fyi I have Vuescan full version but as per what Jon mentioned, I simply could not get decent scans from it. Maybe the problem lies with me. Nikon Scan works so much better for ME. I am very happy with every scan I get now.

As for the Mac question, I will try to do something and update here again. I don't mind if someone can post your experience here. Meanwhile I need to rescan a few rolls that were badly churned out by Vuescan earlier.

P/S I hope this will not evolve into a Nikon Scan vs Vuescan thread. Thanks!

If you had Vuescan on the same machine you installed Nikonscan on then the Nikon program could be using the Vuscan drivers - that's what happened with my installation. Even if you had uninstalled Vuescan the drivers may have been left on the machine. Something to bear in mind if you have any problems later.
