Schneider 14mm f/2.0 Super Angulon for Micro 4/3

I'll be interested to see what else they bring out for M4/3.. I'm still waiting for a fast 17.5mm (35mm in full frame equiv) prime lens with AF, which is M4/3's most glaring omission for me at the moment. I've got my fingers crossed that Schneider will remedy this.

It might have trouble competing with Panasonic's slightly slower but far smaller 14, especially on price. But it looks good!

olly 17/2.8 only a stop slower, costs $200, and with great high iso of OMD, should be fine in a lot of situations.

Well, a 17mm lens is certainly quite different to be direct competition. But there is the Panasonic 14/2.5 (already mentioned above) that goes new for about 200 euro on eBay. The Super Angulon needs to have stellar image quality and really good manual focus handling (it looks pretty good in this respect) to make much sense over the Panasonic. I haven't looked into the Panasonic yet, but it is on my list as I consider the OM-D purchase. Obviously, Schneider must have studied this lens to figure out whether their glass is worth the effort, so perhaps they will happily coexist.

So basically the known specs are that it's AF, it's made in Germany, and the optical construction consists of 10 elements, 4 of which are aspherical.

It'll undoubtably destroy the little Panasonic in IQ, but for a price. Regardless, this makes me REALLY interested in getting back into m4/3s - as my main DSLR camera system. It's only a matter of time before someone makes a fast AFing 17mm too... In fact I'd almost bet that by the end of 2012 there will be 3 or so fast 17mm's to choose from.

There's no way that lens should be called a Super-Angulon : it should be a Distagon.
Or is it only Zeiss that reserves Super-Angulon for near symmetrical wides and Distagon for reverse tele-photo wides ?

That lens is huge! I know Schneider has the quality, but why can't they design more compact lenses? Especially for a compact system.

Well, I think m43 is currently the best mirrorless system... if you are looking at the combination of both quality bodies and lenses. No other mirrorless company comes close in that regard. Samsung might be the closest with their fairly well thought out lens line up. But definitely not Sony, Nikon, or Pentax. Fuji went for a different niche with only a handful of primes, but they don't meet your $400 cutoff either... not to mention the price of their one and only body!

When viewed as a system, I think m43 is looking pretty healthy right now. News of high quality glass can only be viewed as positive, whether the entry level folks buy them in droves or not. If anything, I think this points to a need for a no-bs pro-spec m43 body. The OMD is closest in that regard... maybe the GH3.

I have a feeling this is for the semi-pro / pro videographer. Panasonic is pretty popular for video as far as I know.

For still images, I dont see any reason to shoot Schneider instead of the Panasonic 14mm 2.5.

As a long time Olympus user and fan, I find myself amused reading all this recent singing and praising for the company that just two years ago was practically-speaking, a laughing stock! I know a few of you here on this forum can relate with me on this one. 🙂

I am really encouraged that companies like Schneider joins the m4/3rd market. They know how to build good optics and hopefully will become a key player on the world-class lens lineup that seems to be forming up right now for m4/3rd.

I hope they aren't serious about the hughe-branding around the front barrel, this looks so tasteless it makes the lens look cheap
