If I compare the shutter sound of my M2 to my DS M3 its like "breaking a carrot" vs. "closing a zippo". Its difficult to describe. Are there differences in the shutter mechanism or shoud they sound equally?

When they are from the same period, they are identical. The earlier M3's however have a different mechanism and may sound different.
In fact not two Leica M cameras sound exactly the same.

Congratulations for adding new vocabulary to Leica's jargon. Some stale carrots do not break, there are a few different sounds of "a closing zippo".
Joke aside, they are completely identical. I still have three M2's and four M3's (SS), I can hardly detect any sound difference above 1/30. BTW, what was the last year they got any CLA?

When I tested the M2 vs M3 when deciding which camera I liked more, one of the things I checked was the sound.
For me the M3 was a little bit quieter but not enough to make any real difference.
The sound was a little bit different. I don't know how to describe it well but the M3 shutter sounds a little more "hollow" as if the camera were going off inside a small box, the M2 sounds more full/thuddy.

The differences could also have to do with recent CLAs and perhaps non original parts being used for necessary repairs. I know my M3 and M2 sound quite different from each other

I agree that different lubrication of the two cameras will account for it. This should be most obvious at 1/15 and 1/30s, and of course would be confirmed if the slower speeds are hanging up.

Why does it matter?
Arcimboldo is asking a specific question about the shutter mechanism. If you can't help him, please consider not posting. Or feel free to ask him with a pm if you really care.
If you are really into why does it matter, please ask this in your own thread in the one of the forums more appropriate for the more cosmic questions.
Arcimboldo, from my limited experience, once cleaned and tuned (by the same tech), I doubt you'd hear much difference. I've picked up a body that a previous tech had ramped up the spring tension to get the speeds in range, and it sounded different. Once adjusted correctly, it sounded like the other body.

Thank you for your replies. I think i should take the bike and make a nice bicycle tour to Solms in order to fix the Problem. Indeed, the M2 shutter is full, the M3 shutter sounds "tinny".
Exposure time seems to work properly on both.

Shutter sound Leica M2 vs M3
I have a first series M2, push button rewind* and a late model M3. The shutters are close in sound but the M3 has always been quieter., even after a same time CLA.
The shutters are not the same! The M2 has different sized drum and the height is less than the M3's shutter.

It doesn't matter because no two M cameras sound exactly alike. I have a couple M4's, a couple M3's, and an M6, but all sound slightly different. The condition of the shutter curtains, lubrication, and amount of spring tension needed to bring the shutter speeds within spec are all likely different, and as a result, all the cameras sound different.

This is the more important question indeed.

Well, the question was if the shutter mechanism is different or not. I didn´t want to know if you consider this question more or less important. This is the more important question indeed.

Actually, why should you care about the OP's motive? At face value it appears that you want to pick on the OP. I laud the OP for being curious.
