My lens is the plain (not TH patent) with S/N 2889xx
Don Goldberg had a very hard time to CLA it. IIRC, he told me that the mechanical design was kind of special.

seems the Leica User Forum is also including the Taylor and Hobson copies, while Laney is not. The Leica forum lists over 6,500 made before the war, while Laney includes post-war lenses and still only gets to 6,100 lenses made.

I picked the numbers out of Sartorious, first thing that came to hand. Remembering the photos on Ebay I wonder if anyone has ever re-polished the front element of a (an?) Xenon...it being uncoated?

I know Peter at CRR used to do it for Summars and think it is somewhat frowned upon but in this case I suspect there is little to lose...
 
It sure would be nice to pick up an old one and have it redone by John van Stelten someday. I'm without a 50 at the time since I sold my previous 50 to fund the purchase of a 35.

It would have to be a multi-stage endeavour though, I'm switching to a new career and for the time being it would take me a lot of time to save up for the purchase and subsequent restoration.

The final price for the kit in the OP was way beyond my current horizon 🙂 which in fact likely is too limited for any Xenon anyway.
 
However... buying the lens with a camera attached could be an economic way to do it if you resell the body. In this example you should get £140 for the body (more if it is ex-RN) and the lens comes in at around the same price. You'd probably pay half that again for a service, so your lens would have cost a total of around £200 but be worth significantly more.

Simon,

while your reasoning is sound beyond a doubt, I would not consider breaking up a likely original combo with that much history in it.

As a result, I would have to get both lens and body into specs and that would get pretty costly after all...

Unless somebody here bought the kit, wants to sell me that lens. In which case I of course cannot be held accountable... 😉
 
I suspect that with markings defaced and no provenance the camera is not a gold mine!

Start saving Johan, with a lack of activity on the work front it will only be a few months before I have to start selling some black conversions...
