Johnny Depp Uses a Kiev!?

It was a slow day at the office today so in between phone calls and a few emails and some other light duties, I caught up on a couple of things in my Netflix Instant Queue, most notably, The Rum Diary (an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's novel).

First, it's a great, great movie and is filmed extraordinarily well. The cast is top-notch and the whole project was, in my humble opinion, exquisitely done.

I noticed during one part of the movie that Johnny Depp was shooting with an older RF camera that resembled a Contax. At one point in the movie, he raises the camera to photograph a little girl and you see that it's actually a Kiev.

I'm not sure, but Kiev's probably weren't the journalist camera of choice back then. I would assume that it would have been an actual Contax RF.

Anyway, just thought it was funny. Here's a screen grab of it from my computer (gotta love that feature).

If you watch the film, he doesn't even focus before she shoots. But the subject he chose to shoot was pretty amazing. I don't think this is Johnny Depps personal camera by any stretch of the imagination. The film crew probably just rented the most old school film camera they could find.

Yeah I know... I didn't think it was his camera. It was just a catchy headline. 🙂

The Kiev was chosen because Hunter Thompson had one at one point. He writes about it a few times in various stories. In the mid 1970's, he also wrote about spending enough money on a "japanese" camera to buy 3 pounds of coke.

Haha. And even worse when they show you the view through the viewfinder and it's got a giant cross hair in the middle with a bunch of blocks around it and you KNOW it's not the correct viewfinder for the camera the person is using...

Yup. That gets me every time. When an actor uses a nonslr camera and they put a mirrorslap noise on it. Sounds more pro, I guess.

Wouldnt take movies so seriously.

As i suspected guy was all show,he probably played golf as well.

And cars. My father had a Mark 2 Jaguar and the sound of the door closing was as nice as a good camera mechanism, but in nearly all films they dub in some sort of abused Plymouth or Chevy sound, very tinny.
