And now to flip it on its head. What do I love most (in no particular order)?

Mixing the viewing of photography with alcohol

Can you match drinks to pictures? For example, Henri Cartier-Bresson calls out for a claret, and Willy Ronis for red vin de pays. How about:

Ansel Adams: A slightly pretentious Californian chardonnay

Roger Fenton: crusted port

Martin Parr: Coca-Cola

Frank Sutcliffe: brown ale, or possibly mild and bitter.

Andreas Gursky: flat Perrier

Our own Dave Lackey, to get in the mood for his present project: bourbon, or possibly moonshine

Tina Modotti: Mexican brandy

Alexandr Rodcheno: vodka

Or, of course, you can turn it 'round. Which photographers would go best with a straight malt? With a whole bottle of cheap Scotch? (Probably a 1930s newspaperman) Champagne? (Ourselves, when or work has just sold) Calvados?

David Hamilton: Babycham

Americans may need to Google this one to see the joke: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babycham which unfortunately neglects to tell you that Bbycham was in the 1960s, and may still be for all I know,the preferred drink of girls trying to look sophisticated when being bought a drink by their older boyfriends. 'Older' in this context means '15 or older'.

Alternatively go to http://www.babycham.com/home.asp where they ask you to enter your date of birth before admitting you to the site...

Ha, ha! Funny timing...we have a trip to Lynchburg, Tennessee planned for next weekend, maybe Friday on the way over to Asheville on Saturday.

Thanks to this thread, Roger, I have a project today...mixing a mint julep for a photo session of said libation. Have to wait until I get to the Great Smoky Mtns to pick up some moonshine.

Absolutely...not sure how to set it up and it will probably take multiple attempts since I don't exactly have a beautiful model, backdrop or even good lighting with the rain today, but a snapshot is certainly possible.🙂

For now, maybe just a visit to the Jack Daniel's website for really good photos and the recipe:

Jack Julep

Ingredients
  • 2 parts Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7
  • 1 tablespoon simple syrup
  • Mint sprig
  • Crushed ice
Instructions
  • In the bottom of a mixing glass, muddle 1 sprig of mint with simple syrup. Then fill with crushed ice. Add 2 parts of Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7. Stir gently. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig
 
Just wondering...what would one call a drink in honor of HCB?

With all the gear talk, we need something really creative like a Bresson-Claret, or Henri-something or other....
 
If you want a really REALLY good mint julep--toss the JD.
Use one of the "Bs"--Booker's, Baker's or Blanton's.
All over 100 proof--required for best effect, ya know.

I don't recall hearing about Babycham before this mention, but I get it. Funny. Thanks to Frances for that one.

I don't drink alcohol anymore, so my preferences and recent experience would be Coca Cola (decaf and sugar free), or coffee (Vietnamese), or Tea (preferably green). But who in the world to match that to I wouldn't have a clue.

Fun question though. Thanks for this thread Mr. Hicks. I am enjoying it.
 
When I first opened this thread I thought it was going to be about drinking and taking photos....hahaha....now that I just read it, it reminds me of a night when I was in university in San Francisco...

I used to work at a popular bar in the Bay Area as a bartender and one night there was a large group of photographers that had booked the upstairs out for a private party...I remember they were from sportsshooter.com and two of the owners of the website were regulars at my bar and they came in the night before the party and told me about the party....and they wanted me to bartend for them.....

So I made a drink special called "Ansel Adams F/64" and I wrote it really big on the "special drink of the night board", I forget what the drink was (whiskey and something else), but I remember bringing my Leica to work that night and having a blast with the guys......good times, good times.
