Hands on reviews for xe1 already out

I still can't believe how often the word 'rangefinder' or the description 'rangefinder like' gets mentioned in these reviews ... it's no wonder so many people are misinformed as to what a rangefinder camera actually is!
 
One complaint: they need to move the tripod socket or the battery door. I've been very annoyed with my x100 when the battery ran out while mounted to a tripod

... "rangefinder" are hip and associate "Leica" ... ;)
 
In the imaging resource review, they mention a kit price of 1400 for both xe1 plus the new zoom. I do not remember anyone else mentioning this yet, but I have not started reading the info from dpreview yet.

Dpreview also shows a 1400 kit price now that I had a chance to read that one as well...

I agree with the comments about the misuse of the term rangefinder for these types of camera but I can understand the confusion. I think that cameras are developing around a few form factors that are still maintaining the historical descriptive term. I have an X100 and it does look like a RF, I also have a micro4/3 G3 that does look like a SLR, it is the LCD only form factor that doesn't seem to have attracted an historical style name yet.

I don't tend to use the OVF with my X100 so the new Fuji has its attractions for me.
 
The camera looks a bit odd without the OVF in a way that the Sony NEX7 doesn't. I think this is due to the style of camera. You expect an OVF in a traditionally styled camera. It looks a bit blind (ironic due to it's improved EVF).

Not only did they add distance and dof scale on the lens but the olympus style of push/pull to engage or disengage manual focus mode.. YES.

Fuji certainly seems to have listened and learned from x-pro1 users and I like the new features on this new camera. Makes you wonder what the X-200 & X-Pro2 will be like.

That was one solution I was hoping for to solve manual focusing. If they release a MkII version of the 35mm 1.4 with that feature I will double dip. I do wonder how the manual override affects the MCS dial on the front and in the camera...

Interesting though... in the photos of the new 14mm, there is an aperture ring, but no aperture numbers. Hopefully they'll paint them in for the final version... It makes sense for no numbers on the variable aperture zoom, but doesn't make sense for the fixed aperture prime.

I like being able to know my settings without having to look in the camera.

And on that... I do secretly hope that Voigtlander eventually makes small (Leica sized), manual focus, lenses in Fuji X mount. Similar to their M43/Canikon offereings. That or Fuji release a limited edition "Heritage" X mount Fujinon with manual focus only, tiny form factor and chrome with black trim (a guy can dream).
 
I have to say, I am really disappointed that this is the follow-up to the X100 and the X-Pro1. An electronic VF only with a big, honking zoom lens? Why don't I just get a D7000 or an NEX-7? The OVF is, for me, the raison d'etre of this Fuji line. I have had my X100 for a year now and I have never used the EVF outside of when I'm forced to (macro mode). The OVF in the X100 is a compromise for me to get some of the feeling of my Leica M's, while allowing straight digital captures; the EVF just makes it feel like my old Lumix GF1.

I really don't like the direction, but apparently a lot of folks do.
 
From dpreview piece it seems like Xe1 is a XPro1 with an EVF, smaller LCD and the new firmware.

We've had our hands on a fully-functional per-production X-E1 for a couple of days, and our first impressions are that Fujifilm's promises aren't idle. Autofocus seems quicker and more-responsive, and the 'feel' of manual focus has certainly been improved. We're not convinced it can yet match the very best of its mirrorless peers...

The main selling point of this camera is its sensor, however, with used Xpro1 going for close to 1000, which will perform the same with updated firmware, I don't see the point of getting this one.
