Interesting Thought

I was walking around Portland's Pearl District the other day & was shooting street shots w/my F4 w/35mm lens when I was stopped by a customer in a Starbucks (what else!). He asked what I was doing & what I was using & then offered an interesting thought - he said he didn't mind being photographed, but hated the sound of the auto-winder since it seemed, to him, to suggest that I was in too big a hurry to get the next shot & not terribly "into" this one. I thought it was an interesting observation.

I agree with him: I've never liked cameras with autowind as either an operator or subject. It's one thing that bugs me about the digital M's and my RF645i but at least you have the option of a discreet mode that delays the wind-on noise on the M8/9.

One of the attractions of a camera for me is the lack of noise when operating it. If you're not taking photographs of fast moving subjects, such as sports, or require it for remote camera operation I fail to see the point of motorised winders - and for sports a well-timed capture is not dependent on the motor.

I fail to see the point of motorised winders -

I have motor dives on the four SLRs (Nikon F, F2, FA, FM) that I routinely shoot with, and I use them for reasons that are important to me as the shooter, and frankly wouldn't and don't care what a stranger thinks about it.
For candid street photography I feel they are essential simply because with them the shutter is always cocked, so I never lose a candid simply because the film wasn't advanced, and there is no need to remove the camera from my eye to advance the film.
And except for the outrageous prices that they command, I'd also have drives on my Nikon rangefinders as well.

My D5100 has a "continuous" shooting mode. It actually has annoyed me when I have used it for almost the same reason . . . I'm thinking "Jees, Dave, let's do one shot at a time, okay? "

I have motor drives on my Nikon F3hp and FM2n but I don't use them for street photography.
For street, I use my Leica M 100% of the time.
