I think these are fair.

I have a feeling that while the M10 will technically improve upon the M9 in many ways, it will be much different than the traditional M.

That is a great list. Too bad it won't include some autofocus lenses. The S2 has autofocus lenses so Leica is capable of doing it.

I know that live-view is a deal breaker for M-purists (it wouldn't be a "Messsucher" M after all) but that has always seemed to me to be such an obvious next step for Leica. After all, the FF body could then be more like a universal platform for traditional 35mm lenses of all types -- something that is missing in FF from the marketplace. Slap that Zeiss Distagon on their baby, or put a Pentax or Fujinon 42MM threadmount lens in front of that big bad sensor. With good QC on adapters, you'd separate the world class lenses from the also-rans in a heartbeat.

There are at least two kinds of purists.

One is the positive kind that works by inclusion, by defining minimum requirements: an M camera needs to have an optical coupled rangefinder. Another is the negative kind that works by exclusion, by defining things they don't want to see: a "true" M camera must not be battery-dependent, must not be digital, must not provide live view, must not be affected by limited parts availability etc. This latter kind is often very vocal and often also suffers from a kind of "no true Scotsman" moving target syndrome.

There is really no reason that a camera can't provide a rangefinder ("Messsucher") and live view in the same body; so the M10 can be an M just like any other M before it. Some negative purists will reject it anyway no matter what, just like negative purists rejected the M5 on grounds of being different, the M6 on grounds of having a meter, the M7 on grounds of being battery-dependent, the M8 on grounds of being digital and so on.

Leica cannot afford to be wrong with the replacement for the M9 .... there is way too much competition out there now and if the M10 doesn't hit the mark they'll go backwards IMO.
