Canon seems to have given up on still market and slowly shifting to video exclusively.
This camera is simply there to keep canon owners from moving to Nikon, other than that its a very weak response to Nikon.

The 5d mkIII, 1dX and 6d are no less still camera than ANY of the EOS models before them. In fact their (still only) AF is much improved over any previous model. The video part is completely invisible to the user experience unless you specifically want it. So really, I don't know how you have come to the conclusion that they've 'given up on the still market'. Especially considering they still have majority market share (if I remember correctly).
The 6d is $500 less than the d600, I'm not so sure it's a 'weak response' - certainly it gives up a few features, but if the d600 is built anything like nikons lower end bodies, it won't be very nice in the hand, nor particularly durable for decent use.

Not very good...
Wow ... tough audience at DPReview!
The new FF 6D Canon is getting a pasting from quite a few people.
That is because DPR is populated almost exclusively by idiots and not photographers.

Where did youy get the $500 less?
The price for 6D is $2099
Compared to the Nikon D600 you get:
-inferior AF system,
-framerate,
-viewfinder,
-resolution,
-probably noise and DR...
-single card slot...

D600 is $2600 in Aus, 6d is supposed to be $2200. So still $400 difference. Didn't realize that they were same price in the US.
As for the other points:
- You have no idea if the AF system is inferior. Considering the d800's focussing accuracy woes with 1.4G nikkors I wouldn't be so confident in a dumbed down version.
- Resolution will be the same. 20 vs 24mp is like saying 300hp vs 305hp. Other factors way more important.
- Noise and DR - another assumption.
- Single card slot - yep thats the one area the d600 kills it.
I can forsee the 6d dropping in price very quickly TBH.

Canon has always been little cheaper than comparable Nikon, which has little edge spec wise. 6D and D600 just continues the tradition.

I was going to get a D800 to complement my D7000. I'm getting a D600 instead, the fact that they will be quite similar in operation is definitely a bonus for me.
I can't think of any D800 feature that I'm going to miss! In fact, I wasn't exactly looking forward to being stuck with 36 MP (shooting NEF, so no options) and 24 MP would suit me a lot better, personally.
Great!

A Belgian store has the D600 listed for € 2099 - vs € 2699 for the D800.
So Nikon hasn't put out a 'cheap' FX camera by any means, but it has shaved off € 600 of an excellent camera without losing any important features - at least for my use, and I think for a lot of people!

+1. This is pretty much exactly my situation, although I'll probably sell the d7000. I'd just add that I really do use the U1/U2 settings and find the handling and durability and size of the d7000 great, with only minor quibbles. While the difference in price to d800 is not _enormous_, it's a thousand bucks I can use for other stuff (lenses).
No interest whatsoever in comparing with the Canon, since I've no intention of changing my kit, but the fact it's available now is a big plus.
This is the camera I'd wish I'd been able to take on one of those once-in-a-lifetime trips earlier this year. The d7000 was great but I've no doubt full frame would have been better.

I wouldn't stress this too much.

Depends on what you're looking for of course...
D600 vs D7000 I'm guessing:
- Better high ISO (one stop advantage?)
- Better resolution if you need it (and if you can handle it)
- Shallower DOF for same angle of view
For me those are three very good reasons to add a D600 to my kit. Usual disclaimers apply of course, a better camera does not make a better photographer etc etc.
PS. It's come in at 1999 EUR in Belgium apparently, deliverable from 25th of september! Nice, another 100 EUR off, which means the difference with the D800 is now 700 EUR.
I'll turn off the fanboy-mode and I'll just go and pre-order one now

I meant specifically regarding his past vacation photos and what could have been.
I know the advantages of full frame by the way.

Thanks - that was not really my point (i.e. 'better' photos) but better in a number of areas that matter to me - viewfinder, lenses, perspective, feel - or that I think matter. That said, no regrets - d7000 turned out some stunning results and better to have gone on that trip than not. But had this been available then, this is what I would have liked to have had to take.

wow didn't realise it was out yet, I think I will get one of these eventually and upgrade from my Canon 5D (Mark I) for architectural work - although it would be good to hear some reviews first
