Sad news- Google buys Nik software. Based on their history, this is not good for the the continuity of the plug-ins, all of which I use. So now Nik users can relate to all those :death of film: posts.

Would they really acquire Nik just to fold the great plug-ins, still wondering what Google's endgame is for these tools. Im with venchka I hope they fold all those tools into Picassa for free! Wishful thinking but one can hope

I think it is related to the future of something like Snapseed and most likely web-based.

I'd like to see a photography-centric android tablet for cataloging and editing, and with USB connectivity (I'm cloud-adverse).
As to the original posting, I don't know how Google has treated its acquisitions, so can't comment on those concerns.

what weird timing... Just yesterday morning I had decided that I would download the 15-day trial of Silver Efex Pro 2 and try it out. I went into it wanting to NOT like it, but I was impressed and am thinking about spending the $200 to get a copy, but now... Where Silver Efex be in a year? Or two years? While I have embraced all thing digital in photography, I'm old and don't like to keep changing how I do things.

Good. No more cheesy high contrast B&W conversions with washed out highlights, blocked shadows and no midtones to speak of. lol
Thank you google.

Well, it's just a tool to be (ab)used just like any other tool.

Pity. Was kinda hoping Adobe would pick them up, and integrate things like Silver Efex, fully into Lightroom. That, or someone at Nik realising the real endgame for their algorithms/ products would be to license them to camera manufacturers so they could be integrated into digital cameras. Google seems to be positioning themselves in an interesting way with photography, and wonder where it will all go..

I went thru the demo trial period as well... I like it... But now not to sure if I will buy it until I find out what direction google is going to take this product.

Nik Software makes Capture NX2 for Nikon. I wonder how long it will be before I need to give Google my phone number in order to access my NEFs.

Keep updated via bythom.com (Thom Hogan). He has some recent comments. Nikon took NX2 away from Nik a while ago (they also owned a piece of Nik, don't know if they held onto that). Based on Thom's comments, outlook not the greatest for future of NX2. I'd used it for a while, but moved on. It has its virtues, but updates are not among them

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out. It seemed to me that Nik abandoned their plugin development for Capture NX2 when they continued to create and update plugins for everything else except Capture NX2. If Nikon took over development of NX2, that would certainly explain the lack of Nik plugs and NX2 updates!
The one thing that NX2 can do that nothing else does was read the actual white balance in NEFs. NX2 blows away ACR for opening NEFs. Adobe's pissing match with Nikon was disappointing and their lame best-guess algorithms are even more disappointing. It is also good for saving multiple versions in the same NEF instead of using sidecar files. I hope it (or something better) doesn't go away.
