Should I trade an m6 for an m3?

meh. Why not. You only live once. If it's a mistake, you come out that much the wiser and swap back.

I'd say sleep about it... if you dont want to trade the M6 then wait and save enough so you can have both :)

you can shoot 50mm M3 and 35mm M6... would be the best solution if you ask me... when you cant decide between the 2

I wear glasses.
For me, the M3 is the worst of all M's.
Had a beautiful M3 a few years ago, after I fell for its siren call/internet hype.
I needed to press hard on the eyepiece to see enough around the frame (at the cost of quickly destroying my right glasses lens).
I swapped it for an M6, never been happier with a trade....
So you see, be careful about internet advises

took the M6ttl out today for a B&W architecture & landscape shoot to an old castle area.... actually it was raining and I wouldnt want to carry 2 M bodies at a time. switched lenses a bit between 28 and 50 and framing with glasses on is so much easier with a .58 viewfinder... got no problems focusing. I dont wanna know how 0.91 feels like if you wear glasses... maybe you dont thus making no sense to you or you wanna shoot 90/135 too with precise focus&frame...

but I'd stick with the M6 although a M3 is just temping because its a M3...

pretty much depends on you...

another thing: to me it matters if I kinda have a ... sounds wierd... relationship with your camera.. that you know it and it feels good.. changing camera might destroy that feeling at first... I'd only buy the M3 as an addition but never just to replace my own..

you'll do the right thing anyway

yeah you are right.. The M6 was my first camera and my first leica so i guess i do have a special relationship with it. 20 years from now If i still have it , it would be even more of a special relationship..

The decision is final im repairing the m6 and getting an m3 afterwards..

thanks everyone for the suggestions

I have a M6TTL .85 Chrome and love it

A couple of folks mentioned keeping the M6, with a CLA, and usign the 35mm and then saving and adding the M3 with a 50mm in the future. Sound advice, a little patience, it is always nice to have a backup camera. If you find you love the M3 solo, you can always sell the M6 in the future.

. . . . . a bird in hand is worth . . . . .

M3 are all old! The glue holding the viewfinder is brittle and weak. I own both. One hard knock could eliminate my finder. I prefer the feel of the M3 but the meter wins hands down over the old piggy back selenium meter. The Metrawat meter CDS that fits the earlier M3,M3,M4 etc is a lousy meter. Unreliable.
My M3 is my MOST repaired camera.Period.

Hi John,

thanks for the post.. Do you mean you can help me trade my m6 for a cla'd m3? I appreciate you saying that.

choosing between the two is the hardest choice for me , I know i will eventually get an m3 too if i keep the m6 because it has a rather mystical feeling for me

thanks

dennis

I have been slow to move what I have, so I guess I am a "collector", my friends keep reminding me to post items for sale, but I always seem to find more and move less.

If loading worries you, the quick load attachments are available. I gave one to my friend Jorge, so he owes me a dinner or two south of the border. They are not common, but also not rare.
;-)

Am not sure if the DR fits all M6s , I know it does not fit the M8 or 9.

If you really want 35mm, the ones with eyes are also around.

I don't think which ever way you go it will be an error.

pm me if you like.

John

Based on what you've said--your M6 needs several hundred dollars worth of work and his M3 is functionally mint--I'd trade without blinking. I had an M6 for a while, and I never used the hot shoe, almost never used the meter, and I think that the winding and film load differences are overblown. They are just different. You'll get used to it.

In the big picture, here is what I would do. I would make the swap, take the several hundred you would have spent on an M6 CLA and put in in an envelope toward an M2. A Krauter or DAG CLA costs about half of what you can get an M2 for. Save until you can get the M2. That way you will have two cameras with parallel/very similar form and function, but one being ideal for 35mm and one for 50mm. Plus, you'll always have a camera in hand if one needs to be sent off for a repair.

i would not. for me, the M6 is the best film M. i can't see shooting without an in-camera meter, but that's my personal preference.
