Anything worth to see near Nice, France?

Im going to Nice in two days and I were just wondering if anyone had some good tips about cool places that are worth visiting. I will be renting a car for some days so it could be places in the areas outside Nice too.

And, is there any camera-shops in the area that sells used gear? I know about ArtaPhoto, but I cant seems to find any others.

It's very near the Nice Etoile shopping centre, which is good if you are travelling with people who have less interest in photography!

ArtaPhoto has a nice collection (not for sale though!) of Leicas and Nikon cameras. Haven't managed to find any other camera shops of note yet!

Finocchio ice cream vendor in the old town is worth a stop. Huge selection of ice cream, including some weird flavours (tomato and basil! Beer flavour not so good. I like the lavender, the ginger and the chocolate and chilli pepper ones).

I like the Chagall Museum the best, Matisse Museum worth a visit also. Then you have the Picasso Museum in Antibes. Antibes is worth a visit. The walk around the Cap d'Antibes is very nice. You might get a look at the security wall of Abramovich's mansion too. Also in Antibes you can look at the super yachts in the harbour. There is a car park beside the Napoleonic era fort (Fort Carre - has guided tours, quite interesting). There is a free shuttle bus from there into the town if you want to safe on parking and traffic. Antibes has a nice but crowded sandy beach. More beaches further along the coast at Juan la Pins.

There is a small museum of photography in Mougins. It's so so. However the Museum of Classical Antiquities in Mougins is superb. Well worth a trip.

I think Renoir's house and museum in Cagnes is closed for renovation. If you are in Cagnes sur Mer, head up the old town (Haut Cagnes). Walk or take the free bus from the main bus terminal. Near the church is a great restaurant - La Goutte d'Eau. It's not expensive and the food is simple home cooked fair, but delicious. Say hello to Fabrice from me.

In the other direction from Nice, with a spectacular drive along the grand corniches, you have Menton. Jean Cocteau museum worth a visit. Inland from there is a short windy drive up the moutains to St Agnes. Village in a spectacular moutain setting. There is a Maginot Bunker you can visit there too (google for opening times as closes for lunch etc.).

Plenty more places to see and visit. If there is anything you are interested in ask away or feel free to pm me. I have visited that area a lot in the last 10yrs and have driven all around the region.

The Picasso musem in Antibes is nice. There is a small town, Villefranche sur mer that's very pleasant and I great place to grab a bite sitting seaside.

I liked the medieval village of Eze which sits high on a hill overlooking the sea. It's close to Nice.

I would take the narrow gauge railway to Cuneo for a day trip. Get off at some of the villages on the way and rejoin the next train.

If you have time, mobility and not reluctant to hiking, you will see better than the riviera : you can discover the "vallee des merveilles" (valley of marvels) more than 30 000 petroglyphs from Bronze age. And enjoy Tende's valley and other old villages. Several alpine stations such as Isola 2000 offer large accomodations. A particular country, part of Italy until 1945, where many people speak among them a specific italian dialect.

Coincidentally, I just returned from Nice. I found it to be a wonderful place, there are so many things to do and see. My girlfriend and I got to enjoy the port festival, which was quite busy, but still fun. It was nice to be able to put my French to use.

I saw an interesting camera shop on Tondutti De l'Escarene street, not far from Place Garibaldi.

I didn't know Nice was in France. You know, a place named "Nice" sounds like a nice place. You would think it was in Disneyland or something. Maybe it is in the French Disneyland? I don't think the French like Disneyland, none of them go there.

But if you're right, and I'm not sure you are, then Nice must be in France, so I'll bet you could see a lot of French people there. They wear berets, so you can tell the French people from the Germans.

Nice itself is a wonderful town (was last tine I was there, 30 yrs back). Stroll the Promenade des Anglais, go into a deli and buy a pain bagne (sort of a nicoise saled on a bun) and grab a chair along the prom and munch your lunch. Go up the high promontory at the east (?) end ot the beach for a great shot down onto the Mediterranean, the old city, and the port of Nice. With only two days, I'd stay right in Nice, but you do have the whole Riviera at your doorstep!

I am still here in Nice and will stay another week because the first days here was with my school. Today my family arrives for a vacation.

I would def support the idea of the Fondation Maeght at St-Paul de Vence, which is one of the main museums for modern art in the world.

Also, you can go to Grasses, which is a capital city for perfumes, Cannes isn't far away either. And indeed plenty of nice trains to take : the train to Cuneo (the famous Ligne de Tende, which isn't narrow gauge I'm afraid, but is run by the SNCF as a touristic train, with a guide commenting the landscapes). It is Nice-Digne which is narrow gauge, with an equal share of beautiful sceneries.

you can also take a train to Marseilles for the day (2nd largest French city). It's not much of a beret-wearing region however, although Nice is famous for being a central point for fashionista of all kinds. Make sure you bring something made of lavender back, as it's one of the local specialties!
