Any news on the new Plustek 120 scanner?

I visit the Plustek site every other day in hope of the announcement of a release date for the 120 ... and zilch!

The official Australia and New Zealand Plustek distributor Scanpro has no information at all on their site about the 120 and no one on this side of the equator appears to be taking pre-orders.

Well, someone told me there's a gingerbread cottage in the forest not far from here ... so I'm off to see if I can find it! :D

I love Vuescan for scanning black and white on my Nikon LS-8000ED. Nikon Scan is buggy and slow and prone to crashing, and Silverfast is ridiculously overpriced. For my scanner it was $500 when I checked into it years ago. F--k that. Vuescan was $80 when I bought it ten years ago and includes free upgrades FOREVER. Worth every penny.

And what's even better is that your copy of Silverfast won't work with every scanner you own. You have to pay to have them unlock it for each model you own. So, if you have a 9000 and 5000ED you're paying twice. Not full price times two, but still.

I asked Lasersoft about this and they gave me this big long explanation about how each scanners needs a custom version of SF bla bla bla.

Of course the demo version of SF will work with anything you throw at it.

The other thing is that depending on how expensive your scanner is, they force you to buy a more expensive version of SF. So, if you have a Nikon 4000 you can use plain vanilla SF. If you have a 5000ED you are forced to buy SF AI plus. It's a total racket.

SF produces very good results, but it's overpriced, the GUI is quirky and quite frankly I don't like a company that tries to fleece it's customers at every step.

I was wondering the same thing: has anyone received a shipping update indicating that this is actually shipping tomorrow? I'm still surprised at the lack of information and more so at the lack of comments in general since Photokina :)

Based on having seen it at photokina, and talked with the people selling it, I think I'm probably going to buy one. They reckoned that the tested true resolution was around 5400 dpi, which is enough for me. It looks well made; the holders look pretty good (though of course there's always the possibility of improvement); d-max is very good; and it can scan up to 6x12 in one bite, and 6x17 in two bites, without, as I understand it, removing the film from the holder.

Cheers,

R.

B&H still says Expected availability: September 30 2012, not tomorrow. Either way, I am not holding my breath on having it shipped this weekend...

To add to Guido's Photokina report, I also stopped by the booth when I was there to speak to the rep from LaserSoft--he said that the expected ship date was "between two weeks and two months," and that he'd like it to be closer to two months so that the driver could be optimized fully.

Surprised to see B&H expecting to ship. I'm going to inquire about getting a unit in for review, hopefully I can secure a loaner and report back.

Well, B&H is closing up for 10 days after Sunday, so if it doesn't ship by then, it won't til at least mid-October.

(removed my previous comment about lack of sample scans, after reading Guido's earlier post, all is now clear. )

One thing I will be very interested in seeing is how well the Plustek compares to the V700 in terms of dust removal. I use Silverfast 8 (SE or whatever the entry level version is) and its new dust removal algorithm works very well in conjunction with the IR scanner in the V700. I wonder, given Guido's comment that the IR in the Plustek is not up to the Coolscan standards, whether or not we will see an improvement over the Epson?

Well, I guess if you order before Sunday, and it is available by then, B&H will ship it before October 10th. I did pre order it, but, at this point, I don't think it will ship on the promised date.

From B&H:

All orders placed before Sunday. September 30, 7:00AM EDT will be processed normally.

Let's give Plustek a break - looks like the rep posting to FB is gonna work the weekend to get some more samples out there. As far as I'm concerned, even this first image is great to see - dust and all. At least the scanner really isn't vaporware!

we all are pulling for a good product from Plustek. The number of posts on this thread show it. many of us are anxious to see some convincing scans by now (even Photokina is over) before shelling out $2K. Posting a scanned pic like that on Facebook without much details just make us nervous.
Lets hope to see some more.

I am mostly (meaning only 100%) concerned about focus sharpness. The problem we all suffer with the flatbeds is lack of focus.

I am (((((hoping))))) for great things here.

Looking forward to this as well. I'm using a Nikon V ED for my rangefinder, but I'm anxious to pick up a TLR in the near future---possibly some other medium formats down the road.
