Pretty crap weather here lately and out of sheer boredom I decided to catalog and price up my gear. Jeeze, I nearly had a seizure! Based on "fire sale" prices my gear acquisition over the last few years has considerably surpassed my realisation. In fact it's way past the value of my new car! Currently I'm looking at "fly out" prices of some US$25K! God only knows what I actually paid for it and damned if I'm gonna check.

But what is equipment 'worth'? Many years ago, there was a camera 'fence' in the UK who neglected the basic rule of his trade: buy cheap, sell quick. Instead, he advertised stolen gear at top dollar -- as a result of which he had $250,000 worth of inventory (at his valuation) when he was nicked. He did time for it, but he's out now. Still dealing, last time I saw him. Just (I assume) not hot gear any more.
