Should my lens unscrew apart or is something wrong? If I hold the lens in front of the f stop ring I can unscrew the lens and it comes apart in front of the distance scale ring. Is this correct??

That should not happen. It is possible to do this, but with great effort. I had the same thing happen to my 50mm Summarit; I don't know what the fix is. I had to send mine for CLA anyway, and prior to that the diaphragm blades all came off; my heart sunk. When my lens (finally) came back, I could not do this again, when in the begining I could with the slightest force. I am not applying much force now, I don't want to repeat it again.

I've never owned a 50mm Summilux, but that's my experience with a lens that is its cousin.

As far as I know, old Leica lenses are designed to have the optical cell to come off to be used on Visoflex. My Summilux (1964) can be unscrewed as well as both 90/2 (1997) and rigid 50/2 I used to have. Only my anniversary 50/2 doesn't have detachable optical cell.

Just as an additional info, you can also unscrew the ring in front of the aperture ring. The whole front cell will come off and you can access the aperture blades. My guess is it was designed that way for service/maintenance purpose. I might be wrong though.

Kris,

Only the 90mm lens could be used "properly" with the visoflex. I am not sure if the others are intended to unscrew easily, or if some set screws have been backed off/missing. I seem to remember my Summarit having some play until I tightened a set screw.

Brian, the Summilux doesn't unscrew easily. I accidentally unscrew it when trying to remove a filter. I assumed most lenses, except those wideangles that don't clear the mirror, can be used on Visoflex using some adapters. Must be false assumptions then. There was this 200/6.8 that goes on Visoflex for sure though because I did try it myself. Maybe it's an R lens adapted to M mount?

There are M lenses made just for the Viso-Flex. The 90mm Summicron "module" has a matched bellows for close-up work, and has a mount that allows use on the Reflex cameras. Leica made some odd accessories.

Dual-range Summicron has a removable head for use on a Viso...

Reviving this old thread because the same thing just happened to me. I put a filter on my 50/1.4 and when I tried to take if off the whole front of the lens unscrewed - I noticed this right away and stopped so it never fully came off, and I tried to tighten it back as much as I could. Now I can't get the filter off, and can't seem to focus correctly. Anything I can do or just assume it's messed up and send it to DAG?

The E43 Summilux 50mm were made to unscrew for service, so you don't have anything to be worried about. Just tighten it back up so that the aperture index dot lines up with the numbers. To unscrew the filter, grip the lens just behind the filter and unscrew it 🙂

Barrel stuck against the filter glass, I assume. Before sending it in, try to unscrew it, remove the filter, screw the lens together again, and test whether it now is in focus and the filter will screw on and off easily and without affecting focusing. If nothing internal to the cell has come loose, that should fix it.

OK, so this is sort of good news. But does anyone have any suggestions about *how* to unscrew it? Seems completely wedged and not sure how to procede without damaging it. The filter is barely a 1/8" think so really hard to get a grip on it, any attempt to loosen it loosens the whole element.

1. first unscrew the lens from the barrel - this should reduce the strain on the filter thread and make it easier to unscrew the latter.

2. Try not to squeeze the filter while unscrewing it - the most simple method is to press the filter down on a rubber mat or other high grip surface (if you don't mind damaging the filter, sandpaper would do just as well) and unscrew it by turning the whole cell.
