Wide angle lenses for LTM cameras

There aren't many LTM lenses available for lenses wider than 20mm. I have been using SLR lenses as my wide angle lenses for LTM cameras. I really like the results from the Canon FD 17mm/4. It is rectilinear and without distortion, as much as I can see. It works also very well on the M9 without vignetting.


I use Canon Adapter B to mount the FD lens on LTM cameras. Try it.

An adapter for sale in NL for EUR 80,00 and the lenses aren't easy to find either... yikes.

I'd go with the Voigtländer 21 or 15. But the results from those Canons are nice indeed...!

I use the SLR lenses to save some money. I have the CV 25/4 ltm, but that's it for lenses wider then 28mm. There can be a problem with hittting the sensors of the M8 and M9 with non-retro focus lenses, such as the Rokkor 21/4 or Canon 19/3.5, which I all use with film cameras.

There are several 17/4 on ebay right now. The 19/3.5 is costly when it is a RF lens. The optically identical SLR version costs far less.

I mean I have a CZJ Flektogon 4/20 (M42) but that would just be a 24mm approx.
The CV Heliar 4.5/15 I have makes more sense on an M8 and it's also not that expensive.

This is the Canon 17/4 on a Tower 35.

The Canon 19/3.5 and the Rokkor 21/4 and the Nikkor 21/4 are much smaller.

On the M9 there is no cropping.
On the M8, you have better alternatives. I only have a 25/4 as my RF very wide angle lens. Using my SLR lenses that I already own does not cost me anything. I have the adapter already.

The Canon 7.5mm circular SLR lens is a 15mm lens on a micro 4/3 camera, with little fisheye effect.On an M8, it would be a 10mm lens.

I would love to have a28mm for my IIIc but between cost and how little I would use it I just use an SMC Takumar 28mm f3.5 on an inexpensive adapter. I use this outside where scale focusing is easy.

If I need to be serious about a 28mm I have a 28 Summicron for my M6. One of my all time favorite lenses. Joe

I've been using Nikon SLR wideangles (20, 24, 28, 35) on Leica MDa bodies via a Novaflex LEINIK adapter for street photography for a long time now.
It makes for very liberating photography.
I seldom use a viewfinder, so no eyelevel action, just the most basic ''point in the general direction and shoot'', and sort out the horizontals and composition in the darkroom.
It's a great way to get genuinely candid pictures of unsuspecting ''victims''...

I also often use the same technique. I have a FSU 20mm finder that I sometimes use.
A 21mm or 15mm RF lens is not cheap. Using SLR lenses is a reasonable thing to do.

They work. I used today a Canon FD lens, plus Adapter B plus ltm/m plus M/micro 4/3 on the EP2. Such use brings "outdated" equipment back into fashion.

The new camera systems opened the door for using old SLR lenses. I use Rolleiflex mount Zeiss lenses on micro 4/3 cameras.

I've always wanted to see the results from the Canon 24mm f/1.4 L on an M9. Now that I'm a Nikon DSLR user, I'm trying out how to machine the rear of the Canon lens to mount it on my D2x.
