Hi Erik, and others,

In terms of strict accuracy am I right in saying that 'Elmar-M' only relates to the later (1995 onwards) 50mm Elmar and not the 3.5 and 2.8 Elmars produced between 1954 and, I think, 1974?

This later lens is something quite different, I don't know when production stopped but I believe it be within the last few years.

What slip-on hood diameter do those take?

The correct hood is the ITOOY a deep tubular thing, but the hoods for a Summicron 50mm will fit, 12585.. etc

The lenses of the batch 13XXXXX sometimes have raised red dots

Mine is 133xx and has the raised dot..

I believe there are two types of VALOO.

Yes, there are the post-war VALOO and the pre-war VALAU. They both do the same job, but the VALOO does have click stops and uses the numbers 3.5, 4, 5.6 etc. and the VALAU uses the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 10 and has no click stops. The VALOO is black, but the VALAU is in nickel and is much smaller. The VALAU can be used as a shade as can the VALOO. Maybe the VALAU also exists in chrome, but I've never seen one.

Yes, the later lens is called the Elmar-M, it is a 50mm f/2.8 lens, but it is not a rotating one like the older 50mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/3.5 lenses. The construction is more like the Summar, Summitar and Summicron collapsible lenses. Optically it is the best of them all and in fact it is the best 50mm Leica-M lens. It is discontinued because it disturbed sales of the much more expensive Summicron-M 50mm f/2.

As stated - the correct hood is the ITOOY - but these are a bit scarce and getting expensive. The "regular" 50 Summicron hood will fit - but it jams up against the aperture ring and makes it difficult to turn it. Ideal hood is the one made for the vII 50f2.8 Elmar-M. A nice, small "tube" that screws in to the front of the lens.
If you can find some 39 mm filters - particularly the old "color correction" filters that no-one wants (various shades of pink) - you can remove the glass in them and stack 3-4 of them and screw them in. Because of the construction (aperture blades right up front and front element right out there) it is prone to flare.

I believe there are two types of VALOO.

One is the rather large attachment that was intended for use in the darkroom, when using the Elmar as an enlarging lens.

The other is a small ring with a notch that engages the aperture on the lens. This ring fits inside of the standard Elmar hood and allows for adjusting the aperture. They are somewhat rare and quite expensive. Most were probably thrown out, because they look like a washer of some sort.

I've got one of the latter type of VALOO, which I use inside a filter or hood on my 50/3.5 Elmar. They work, sort of. And, yes, they are expensive...

so I have to look out for 39mm filters, are these push on or can I attach any screw in 39mm filters
