Hey guys... so I've been looking for a Canon 7 and I found someone that has a few.

He said that 1 of them is in working condition but needs to be CLA'd... the other 2 are a little worse off and would need to be fixed or could possibly be used for parts for the first during the CLA process if needed. He offered to sell the 3 of them to me, plus a 50 f/1.4 lens for $500.

Is that good? crazy cheap? What should I be aware of? Also... do you guys have recommendations for a place to do the CLA... I was thinking of giving Toshio in East Brunswick, NJ a call. I'm located in NJ.

I think that is about market for 2 sort of rough needs repaired bodies, 1 working and a 50/1.4

I only say this in terms of price if you were to go sell the rough bodies..

I don't know anything about Canon 7's functionality though, or where to get them fixed.

It's a heck of deal, If they are all in good condition. There's always a wide variation in vintage gear depending on condition. Condition doesn't just depend on appearance, but function too.

I have no connection to the seller, but there is a working Canon 7 with a good lens in the classifieds here for $245... Sounds a much better deal than three canon 7s that all need a cla for $500.

So a Canon 50mm 1.4 goes for $300-400 depending on the day of the week. A Canon 7 for about $100-150 in working condition. You could probably sell the parts Canon 7s for ~$75-100 each which would cover a chunk of the CLA if they parts aren't needed.

Honestly, this sounds like a fairly average deal with a bunch of work on your end. Granted, any camera from this time period may need work. You may be able to swing this a big more in your favor but you could pick up a Canon 7 and 50mm 1.4 - both in EX condition - from KEH for about $420. Coin flip on if the body needs a CLA. If it does, you may only be out about $80 more than the deal you are talking about which is a bit more risky without a solid return policy.

hmmm... my canon repair guy won't touch these cameras. He says they're too old and it isn't a market he wants to get into. He did a bang up job on my new F-1 though.

So I guess I'm gonna have to stick with something that doesn't need to be CLA'd.

Well, most old, classic cameras, Canon 7 or otherwise, will probably need a CLA. That's just the way old cameras are. If you want a Canon 7, buy one and have somebody else do the CLA. There are other repair techs who will have no problem doing a CLA on a 7.

As someone new to the scene... this post does me no good without links or at least some names.
