Good evening all,
I have just been given a Canon 8800F by my brother who is moving abroad, and I wondered if there were any recommendations you have for software before I start going mad trying all the alternatives (I know I could just Google this question, but I prefer the discourse that will follow - hopefully).
I'm planning to scan a mixed lot of stuff; 35mm, 120 (in various formats), colour, BW and slide.
All help much appreciated.

I use VueScan to drive my scanners. It supports the Canon 8800F.http://www.hamrick.com

I also use VueScan in conjunction with a Nikon Coolscan III and Windows 7 Pro. Works well for me color and B&W. Will work just fine with your Canon.

Try to download Canon's software first. I'm assuming your brother didn't have the install disks, or that the version they included won't run on your computer. It might be worth looking to see if they have an updated version to try. If not, or if you just do not like the Canon software, then I'd look at Vuescan.

Canon software (if available) or Vuescan are the choices.
What software will you use to process the 16 bit files that your scanner produces? Scanners don't produce files that are "ready for Prime Time."

I have a Canon scanner (not my main scanner) and VueScan does not recognize it.

Current list of VueScan supported scanners is here:
http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/vuescan.htm#supported
Notes are included for each scanner in the supported list. For the Canon 8800F, it says:
VueScan works with the Canon 8800F on Windows and Mac OS X.
This scanner has an infrared lamp for scanning film. VueScan's 'Filter | Infrared clean' option can be used to remove dust spots from film scans. This is similar to (and we think better than) the ICE and FARE algorithms. It scans with visible light in the first pass and with infrared light in the second pass.
Infrared cleaning works well with all types of color negative and color slide film, including Kodachrome. However, silver-based black/white film doesn't work with infrared cleaning because the silver particles look the same in visible light and infrared light.
You need to install a Canon scanner driver to use this scanner on Windows and Mac OS X. On Windows x64, you need to use VueScan x64 to use this scanner's transparency adapter.
This scanner is supported on Mac OS X Lion and later if you first install the Canon scanner drivers.
Check the listings for your scanner and see what the notes say.

I use the Canon software (in advanced mode) and start it from within Photoshop Elements (import function).
However had severe issues re-installing when upgrading Windows XP to Windows 7. See this posting on Flickr :
