Camera present to yourself for 50' birthday?!

For a long time my dream was to buy a new digital Leica rangefinder when retirement is the day.

But this is a long way to go because Im 48 and pension plan for me means to be 67 years old.
Also I lost a few buddys in the age of around 55 and so nobody nows...

My favourite idea is now is to go for a M9 in the 2015 to celebrate my 50. 🙂

What do you think?

I decided to do the same thing in January 2014.
Will get it engraved as well 🙂

Nope. for one thing, I don't give presents to myself... I just buy what I want and can afford. But when I turned 50 I let my wife give me a really nice Mercedes Benz... which I'm still paying for. 🙂
 
... but I know what you mean about life and living. If you want a new Leica and can afford one, then get it. Like you, my friends and peers are dropping dead at random times for random reasons. There is no telling when our time is coming so we may as well enjoy life while we have it.
 
I just got an Olympus Stylus Epic and am lusting after a DSLR of some description. This past fall I got a Nikon F and a Nikkormat FTN both in great working order and sweet to look at and hold. Will I ever stop collecting and using film? Don't have any plans to.

When I was 50, I had too many worries and responsibilities to spend big $$$$ on my toys.
If you can afford it without causing yourself $$$ problems, then go for it. Life's too too short.

. . . but on the other hand you may live to be 100 and run out of money at 70 😛 (you just never know).

EDIT: I just noted that you have 2 years to save up for it . . . You have my consent to indulge yourself 😀😀😀
 
For my 50th birthday, I got a nice, high end bicycle. Earlier I had gotten myself the Nikon D700, and around my 51st, I struck gold with another Nikon: an S2 kit (rangefinder).

There you go... Bite the bullet! We're not getting any younger and we deserve a little fun...
 
Things are just things, make sure you budget for the people you love and for creating memories. Maybe a trip to somewhere special with someone special and a camera if budget allows.
 
I buy a present, photographic or non-photographic, for myself every birthday!

I seem to have great taste, and know just what I want 🙂
 
I agree with the sentiment. I'm approaching 50 myself. A few friends that I know from high school have already died (one from cancer). We won't live forever. My wife and I have delayed gratification for so long just so I could get through professional training. It's about time to live it up a little (well, we still have the children's college funds to think about).

The M9 is already out of production, so you may need to find a gently used one in 2015. It would seem to have all that I would need in a digital Leica. Hopefully, it will have depreciated tremendously in price by then.
 
Remember, your fifties MAY be the last decade during which you'll be AGILE. Possible that by sixty or sixty-five you will be redirecting your photography. So do in sooner rather than later. I'm nearly 68, so I know what I'm talking about.
 
So, with less agility, it means a transition to large format photography?

Slower, more deliberate, more contemplative?

Intriguing prospect
